Mooooooved to Webmaster's Corner.

You buy a domain name first (smajere.com /smajere.co.uk / smajere.net etc) and then you see about who's gonna host your pages. Could be an external host, or you could use your own server to do it.

That's as far as I understand it.

Well some people have subdomains(you.blah.com) which are a branch off of a domain, and some people just have a domains (blah.com). Usually when getting a domain you have to pay for them if you want one with good hosting, and most subdomains are free. You can purchase domains at places like Go Daddy.com. And I think you have to buy the hosting separately. You can apply for a subdomain if you visit different designer's sites and sometimes they ask for you to show some examples of your designs, but I know for sure that you can get a free subdomain at Synced.org.

I'm all for personal websites, but if this is just a "Hi, I'm just updating, check it out" thing, I wouldn't really pay for a domain. If you're bothered by the fact that it's not your personalized URL, then by all means, spend a few dollars to get one, but I don't think it's really worth it. Plus, you have to go through the trouble of uploading layouts, and if you don't get hits, what's the point, really.

If you're into blogging, which can be personalized for you, try free websites like Wordpress.com or Livejournal.com. They have pretty good layouts, and some you can even create on your own.

That's good to hear, so cheap but what's about uptime and service ?
I fear for such 15$ host, i am sure they are overselling their hosting packages and attracting noob.
if you are new to websites and hosting then i will suggest you to go with a host who is available round the clock for your support.

I agree too but pink pistol is a small hosting buisness and I have to say that the owner of pink-pistol.net helps me out a lot, she personally answers all my emails and now we have become great friends, and although it might be 15 dollars i forgot to add that the domain is covered so 15 a year for domain and host:]
