we all know that eventually humans will have to deal with some crazy stuff like overpopulation, decaying of the environment, global warming, and running out of fossil fuels and resources.....the fact is that we're feeling the early affects of alot of these lately....
but how soon will it take to become a huge problem that affects our lives directly?? in our lifetime maybe??..... |

#1 - we already ARE dealing with overpopulation. maybe not in america, but in other parts of the world. [ie: CHINA]
#2 - global warming is an issue that is affecting us. maybe not as much as it could...but it is. hence- in new jersey, the weather is all f**ked up. [i dont know about other areas] one day it is 70 degrees [IN THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY] and then the next day it is below zero. #3 - running out of fuels: i have no idea when that will start to be a problem. that's why we should start making almost ALL cars run on something that isn't gasoline. sooner or later, we won't have any choice. |

i doubt it will happen in our lifetime but with how the world is now, i can only imagine what will happen.

you mean the end of the world? the mayans predicted it to be december 23, 2012. but its crazy. and that huuuge asteroid that could potentially harm the earth isn't planning to hit us anytime soon, so environmentally, and i guess our resources will run out faster than we think. everything else, will come later...

QUOTE(karrar @ Feb 18 2005, 6:06 PM) cars will never be solar powered. solar cells do produce enough amperes to drive a car, much less an SUV. QUOTE the mayans predicted it to be december 23, 2012 really? because i predicted it to 2013... in the spring. |

everyone has said it. the debate isn't 'will it happen' its 'what are we gonna do about it'
these things are all REAL. NOW. and the first thing that needs to happen is american signing, and sticking to the kyoto agreement. there is no other way to save the planet! |

that was just something i did in the 6th grade.... i decided on a day the world would end, and i'd tell everyone that.
it was a very good i-a-too-good-for-you-prep-you're-weird deterrant. now it's just for fun. the kyoto agreement is still not enough. president Bush's clean air act increases air pollution, by letting old factories pollute more, if they're not updated more than 1/3 a year. in three years you could have a new power plant polluting like hell. things stay. Ozone degrading chemicals, although they weren't used anymore around the 70s (or so) , are still in the ozone. it will take years to go away. the earth still needs to purge the chemicals we've put. passivly stopping isn't going to work. we need to activley heal the earth. |

we're already bombing iraq for fossil fuel.
none of the republicans in office care about global warming as for overpopulation, capitolism will be this era's form of natural selection. all the poor will die. btw, the myans predicted the end will happen on december 21st, 2012. QUOTE Just hope its after I die. it's that mentality that will kill us all. |

hahaha global warming.... not in our lifetime. I guarantee it.
Besides, if you've ever seen a graph of different iceages over time, you'll see that the weather changed a lot even before humans had any harmful chemicals, and that happened over the course of a few thousand years. You cant really say "omg global warming" when there is evidence that the earth changes its temperature on its own random schedule. |

i think that the debate forum should be renamed as the 'pose a random topic and discuss it' forum. random comment. and there is little accomplishment with the kyoto protocol. i say, people, stop worrying about it and leave it up to the scientists, who know far more than we do.

About the whole energy source thing.....
my boyfriend is working on building a hydrolysis engine from a spare 1988 SAAB 9000 Turbo engine. So far, it's working, and he has sucessfully separated water into hydrogen and oxygen, and he can run the engine from water, and the output is water. His only problem is the combustablilty of the Oxygen and the Hydrogen when they are separate. (if there is a crash or something in the car.) He was thinking that by taking the technology of the impending rollover bars in the new SAAB convertable, and applying it to have it so if there was a crash, or a dent being make in the car, then the hydrogen and oxygen tanks would instanly depressorize. But anyway, you can all visit www.infotrac.galegroup.com . They ask for a username and password.....and I'll give you my school's. They provide real articles on any sort of information you could need on any topic. It's amazing. USERNAME: marysvillehs PASSWORD monarchs -Meagan |

QUOTE #1 - we already ARE dealing with overpopulation. maybe not in america, but in other parts of the world. [ie: CHINA] There's always a surprising increase in population, but something always comes along to balance it out. I forget what it's called. ![]() QUOTE #2 - global warming is an issue that is affecting us. maybe not as much as it could...but it is. hence- in new jersey, the weather is all f**ked up. [i dont know about other areas] one day it is 70 degrees [IN THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY] and then the next day it is below zero. That's most likely because of the tsunami. The earth was tilted by...ack. I can't remember that, either. Like two centimeters or less I believe. I can't remember. Also, back in the seventies, there was the threat of global freezing. That never happened. QUOTE #3 - running out of fuels: i have no idea when that will start to be a problem. that's why we should start making almost ALL cars run on something that isn't gasoline. sooner or later, we won't have any choice. Scientists are working now to create synthetic elements and other solar-powered things (as the post below yours states); I don't think that's really too much of an issue at hand. QUOTE i doubt it will happen in our lifetime but with how the world is now, i can only imagine what will happen. Yes, I highly doubt it, too. QUOTE The Day After Tomorrow... The Tsunami... It's a warning.... The Day After Tomorrow (as much as I love Jake) was simply another propaganda action to make people vote against Bush. QUOTE you mean the end of the world? the mayans predicted it to be december 23, 2012. but its crazy. and that huuuge asteroid that could potentially harm the earth isn't planning to hit us anytime soon, so environmentally, and i guess our resources will run out faster than we think. everything else, will come later... Really? The Mayans predicted that? Hmm. Oh and the sun is due to burn out a long time from now. That might kill us. ![]() QUOTE cars will never be solar powered. solar cells do produce enough amperes to drive a car, much less an SUV. You never know what scientists will develop in the future. Yeah, this is definitely something I strongly disagree with Bush for. We need to do something even if the threat doesn't seem as bad now. I mean, we need to focus on possibly smaller steps. I don't think we should focus all of our energy on this, but I do believe we need to be aware of the future. if you put a frog in a pot of cold water, then gradually heat it, it will just burn to death in boiling water because it doesnt know when its too hot and it has to jump out. (no, i havent tried this). if you think of it, humans are pretty much the same. we are the frog, the earth is the pot of water. we are abusing natural resources, causing global warming, and basically digging our own graves as fast as its humanly possible. by the time that the world's leaders realize they should do something for the benefit of future generations actually ever existing, and not for their own short-term benefits (as in money, cough cough bush, halliburton), it will be waaay too late to save the human species. wen is it gonna happen? i'd say probably by 3 generations' time, if we don't first blow up everyone in a mass-nuclear-war.
call me a ranting satirical psychopathic maniac-depressive teen if ya want, this is just my opinion that you would probly rather live without, the opinion of a disturbed 13-year-old by the way, haven't you people read "Brave New World" and "Brave New World Revisited"? if you haven't, i advise you do if you feel strongly about this subject... |

^ okay, i've been scared by anti-utopian novels, also. just because you read brave new world doesn't mean that you have to be suddenly so paranoid about everything making society collapse.
and i think that technology is moving at a steady speed.. when uh.. "the frog" that is mankind is ready to blow up in the pot, we will probably have the technology to further our species. if not, then we blow up. end of the world. huzzah. it was probably inevitable, anyway. |
