QUOTE(LaRevolucion @ Jul 28 2004, 7:31 PM) Umm...in my case, nobody was really tricked into thinking life would be better in the U.S., it was more of an escape. There is oppression going on still today unfortunately. It's pretty hard to find jobs in the country where my parents are from. At least here there are jobs like cleaning toilets or picking fruit that might be available for immigrants to do. Y'know....jobs that nobody here wants to do. Sure I see your point, but I've heard stories that men and women are tricked into going to the US for either hard labor or prostitution/mail ordered brides (in this case, they can get naturalized but may suffer emotional traumas if the husband is no good)... etc. |

Yeah that's also true, but not nearly as common as other reasons.

I think something should be done. It's not fair that some have to become citizens and others get let off.

Where do you get this? And I think it's already been said several times.. but you have to be a legal citizen to get welfare |

well im hispanic and all, but im a puerto rican, so yeha puerto ricans are not considered immigrants since puerto rico is a commonwealth of the united states, but i dont know, and i personaly have nothing against the illegal immigrants who come here to work, because I know they are super hard working people, and they do it for shitty wages, but in a way in a small way its backfiring, i know places where I have been rejected for work, cuz they are looking for immigrants who will work almost below minimum wage :(, so in a way ist not fair to those who can legaly work, and on top of it, most of the good high paying technology jobs are being taken overseas to places like india where the technicians over teher would do it for way lessss then minimum wage and no health benfits or nothin, so yeha its helpin the economy but also killing a job industry for those who bust thier ass in school trying to get a diploma to work in that field :(

wow, i never thought much about this. i mean, i've seen it in movies or documentaries but i guess this is more serious then i thought it was. the government is putting as much as they could into this problem. but at the same time, it's kinda like smuggling people instead of things into this country. people wants freedom and in order to get that they need to get into this country.

QUOTE You read about all these terrorists...most of them came here legally, but they hung around on these expired visas, some for as long as 10-15 years. Now, compare that to Blockbuster. You're two days late with a video and those people are all over you. Let's put Blockbuster in charge of immigration ^ Haha I find that funny ![]() QUOTE wow, i never thought much about this. i mean, i've seen it in movies or documentaries but i guess this is more serious then i thought it was. the government is putting as much as they could into this problem. but at the same time, it's kinda like smuggling people instead of things into this country. people wants freedom and in order to get that they need to get into this country Err.. I'm not exactly sure what you're saying.. but see.. smugglnig things is diff than smuggling people.. ok so legally perhaps its not, but from a moral perspective.. I don't see how you can kick out a desperate family back to wherever it is they came from where horrid conditions and certain death awaits them.. I mean.. in principle, its easy enough to debate.. but I certainly don't want to be the person that has to do that |

the coast guard is resposible for protecting the shores.
there are 39,000 people in the coast guard on Active Duty. (stat for coast guard website) if they're on 8 hour shifts, then it's 13,000 people at any given time. there are 19,924 km of coast. for one person there is about 1.6 kms of coast to guard. that's 1.6 kms between each set of eyes. now, this is disregarding the fact that many of these people are on ships, so they're all clustered around. how far can you see? 1.6 kms? could you see a bubble trail of a submarine slip in? ( i know, there are instuments people use. ) the border patrol is responsible for guarding the borders. there are 12,034 km of border. there are 9,500 people in the borderpatrol. 8 hour shifts again, so 3,133 people on duty at any given time. that's 4 kms per person. i would like to remind the world that there are 130,000 troops in iraq right now, and that's potentially expanded to 180,000. let's use 130,000 troops. if the troops in iraq are redirected to the coast guard and boarder patrol , then there will be 230,000 people protecting the coasts and borders. that's 0.14 km per person. much more managable. that's 140 meters per person. you can see at least 200 meters. what happend to protecting the homeland? priorities. |

QUOTE(poisonedxivy @ Jun 19 2004, 3:41 PM) i guess the issue on illegal immigrants is becoming more apparent than before. what do you guys think? should something be done to stop this or should something be done? personally i think the government NEEDS to crack down on these people. its unfair if dishonest people cross the border line or reside in america for a longer period of time than allowed. so true. but then again, the gov isn't gonna take any action, are they |

i think that they should allow visas to people who take the test...because my aunts and uncles are trying to come over from the philippines...and they wont give them visas they have been on the list for 15 years now...and no visas yet...

open immigration will collapse the country. there will become more than just two americas then.
most immigrants are willing to work for far less than americans, because it's more than they would get in thier home country. if all immigrants were let in, then all low paying jobs would be given to them. instead of outsourcing jobs to other countries, they would be given to americans. the americans would then become managers, exc. which would make more class seperation. |

but isn't welfare for citizens anyway?
yes, i think mexicans are more willing to work the dirty jobs, americans wouldn't want to do (because we can get better jobs here), so mexicans keep america running behind the scenes for low pay. hmm, they may help the economy and making our country more diverse, but.. i dunno. i'm moving to canada. |

the two america's thing that kerry's talking about.
well, i see it that there is a class divide. i can drive 30 minutes and find million dollar houses with SUVs parked in 4 car garages. i can drive 30 minutes in the other direction and find 3 room housing projects with donated bicycles outside and clothes hung to air dry. there are two americas. but the thing is- illegal immigrants will create a master- servent society. i see this evident in taiwan, except the immigrants aren't illegal. most natives there derive money from the silicon chip buiseness- directly or indirectly. many of them have servants and such. these are portuguese and send most thier money to thier familys. there are stores for portugeuse expescially. the prices are in american dollars, which i think portugeuse people are more familiar with. the owners learn to speak protuguese. however, immigration limits keep this from becoming too widespread. in america, the same will happen. if the borders are opend, then we will become a society of masters ( high class/ high income) governing the poorer immigrants. if, immigration were to be opened, then the immigrants would outnumber previous americans, voting rights would be denied to the immigrants because if they had the rights, then it shall be complete. then minda will talk to the immigrant workers and they will rise up and make a new 'red west' . |

Well, yea, something should be done. We can't have people that are not authorized to be here running around. That rises our terrorist level.

QUOTE(Fallen_Fairy @ Jul 18 2004, 11:18 PM) Could you imagine yourself in that position. Take a man of mexican decent for example. He crosses the border thinking of his family and all he is leaving behind. The immigrants are willing to dodge bullets to provide a better life for their families. Would you be calling them a good for nothing "wet back" if you had to start from zero. You can't even begin to comprehend. Now why don't you look down to where your feet are planted This U.S. soil that makes you take sh!t for granted If not for Santa Ana, just to let you know That where your feet are planted would be Mexico. correct me if im wrong I AGREE!!!! |
