Do you have Photoshop? Use blending modes with the layers. And play with color .. and stuff.

I like to use a whole layer of color on Photoshop and set the layer mode to 'color'. It fills in the picture for you! I'd also put some brushes and textures either behind or over the main images and make sure I duplicate them and set mode to Hard Mix/Hard Light etc with an opacity of about 8%.
