Jobs & Requirements Options

So I was checking up on some job openings available on a Job Bank search (the other day) and found a job that said

"Experience: Will train"

Now this is a retail store chain where I live (Canada) and I looked through their website which lead me to all their job openings for their stores.

I checked the one nearest to me and found out this:

* You have a minimum of 6 months of experience in Retail or Customer Service.
* High School Diploma.
* Etc Etc

I ditched the idea after I read that cause I had neither of those qualifications they said on the site (but not the job bank). So basically, my mom's telling me .. "it doesn't matter if you have a high school diploma or not, employers just put it on." And I was like okay then, what about the 6 months of experience in Retail/CS (which I don't have).

Now she's all like .. dude, you're missing out on an opportunity and stuff like that. Blah blah blah.

In a case like this, do I need to have completed my HSD and actually need to have 6 months of experience? I've had little to none retail work experience, but in the world of getting employment, you just gotta write about anything.

She's telling me I've had 'exposure with clothing & wholesale' through my dad's work.. and use that. Which seems smart, but I don't wanna go to an interview and make up shit just to shoot myself in the foot later.

BUT THEN .. she's like they'll train you, so what experience do you need?

Guh, the terrible world of finding a part time job.

Basically, retail stores jump around quite a bit when it comes to qualifications because "you have to come off as easy to train in order for us to hire you" is not something they'd be able to list. The thing is, if you go into the interview, seem fairly smart, eager to learn, and willing to do the work, they'll usually hire you regardless of experience. You never know until you actually get in there for an interview.

Besides, one thing you have to remember is that there's no harm in going in and at least talking to them. Sometimes when you're looking for a job, it takes a few interviews to find a place, but the end result is that you have a job. That's what you want, right?

Agreed. They were just hiring some new people at my store and I was talking to my team leader after the interviews and they picked a only 1 girl with experience. All the others had none but seemed really willing to learn and smart and like they'd be able to be trained quickly and thats why they were hired. So don't worry. It may take a few tries, but you'll find something I'm sure.

I...actually...never...thought...of...that.

I always assumed that if they listed experience as necessary, it really was necessary.
