This is a bit confusing for me. Free the children is a program that frees the children so that they're more aware of...what they're part in the world is?

Metaphorically speaking, the program "frees" children from the idea that they are powerless to make a difference in their deplorable condition (lack of food, sanitary water, no healthcare, etc.). The program recognizes education as the main motivator for change. If they are able to educate these children, the children will have a chance to actually become something in the world rather than being exploited.
