Your provider doesn't mean anything. It's the router you need to have. Do you have a router or is your computer plugged straight into your modem?

well the desktop computer is connected through the eternet cable to the dsl/modem box (little black box) and the laptop isnt connected to anything since i think its wireless. i just dont know why i cant connect my laptop to the internet while she can do that to hers. she has her connected through something called 2wire..something and i have it on my laptop but i dont know if i have that on my box she bought the expensive box from sbc..on my laptop when u go to network connections..it has 2 or 3 different connections..and i didnt set those up..they were there already..they have one called linksy (sp), 2wire something, and something else..sorry i dont have it turned on right now..but im wonder if i have to buy something but i dont think i need to but im not sure..

buy a router
that splits the internet to more than one source, and it can do it wirelessly too

steve300, youre right about buying a router because today i just called this morning to sbc dsl tech support center and they said the box i had that connected to my desktop could only do one connection. the box my friend had could do it because it could handle two locations for the internet source especially since she got the expensive one..haha figures.

so i dont know which router to buy or what will work/be compatiable with my computer. i have a hp dv6000t, and could someone explain how a router works? and do i leave anywhere in the house and i can get internet anywhere? and when i buy it do, i have to insert anything in my computer?

and..

most importantly, what/which can of brand of a router should i buy? because i want it to be compatiable w/ my hp dvt6000t windows vista laptop. i heard linksys is good but i have no idea which one to get! this is all so new to me.

Because you have Vista, you are bound to have internet connection problems.

I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster - WRT54GS. It has worked fine with me, and I have XP and Vista (Vista did give me problems) comps for it.

What you'll do is buy a wireless router. Lol, make sure to get instructions. And then, try it out and post again with questions. Usually you will buy the router, connect it to your modem box using a wire, and then set up the router using one of your computers. Then you'll try to set up the wireless network. =D Fun, huh? Hours of entertainment, I assure you.

haha...

because the functionality of a router is based off of how good it looks.

I use a WRT54G Linksys router. I can use it with ease. Tech support w/ Linksys is very fast.

A router works like this:

Your internet comes in through the wall and goes to your modem. You connect the cat5 cable coming from your modem into the router. This takes the internet it's receiving and lets you put it on many many computers. My router has 4 cat5 cable jacks in the back, so you can plug a cable into each and connect it to a computer and get 4 hard-wired connections that way. It's also got wireless capability which has no practical limit really. If you get wireless though, you'll want to put a password on it, and you'll want to write that password down somewhere haha (I lost mine and had to reset a bunch of stuff).

I Can help you set up your wireless router if you get a WRT54G. Lemme know how things go.
