problems with saving images w/transparency..., in Jasc Paintshop Pro 8... Options

I've saved images with the .gif optimizer function, and have messed with the transparency levels, etc. But, for example, when I do an image with a drop shadow, I the blackness around the image is kinda splotchy, and there's nothing I can do about it. After using the soften brush, it appears even worse... What can I do about this?
I want the dark edges to be softer and kind of fade into the background...
