Okay, kids. So, I am doing a community service project for my US Goverment class, and I am spreading awareness about the Pennies of Promise Organization.
Early during the first term of this year, I was informed of the organization Pennies of Promise. The organization employs a grass roots effort comprised of the local citizens of Coal River Valley, West Virginia and other concerned citizens across the country. The mission of their effort is simple: To stop children from contracting black lung. Marsh Fork Elementary is a small rural school located in Sundial, West Virginia. The building is a mere 225 feet from a coal loading silo that releases chemical-laden coal dust into the atmosphere and only 400 yards away from a 385 foot tall sludge damn that has been leaking for over thirty years. This coal dam has a capacity of nearly three billion gallons; and the residents of the small town in Southern West Virginia are not getting any less sick. The Governor of West Virginia, Joe Marchin, has neglected to respond appropriately to his community and has allowed the pollution to continue. Peaceful protests such as Community Walks have been sponsored to raise money and awareness. Instead of helping their cause, many peaceful protesters have been arrested, ironically, for “disturbing the peace”. This is a violation of first amendment rights and the situation is a violation of the Bill of Rights. Citizens have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. They should not be forced to live under such heinous conditions as aforementioned. In response toe the subnormal living conditions, the community has been forced to come up with the money for a new school in a different area that is not being encroached upon by chemical toxins. I only need a few more hours for reach my goal of 20 hours, and this is where you all come in! If you would take 20 seconds out of your day to add your name to this petition, it would be GREATLY appreciated. This is a worthy cause, and there is a tag limit for notes, so repost this and/or tell everyone you know! Our orginial goal was 1,000 signatures. Let's see if we can do it! Thanks so much, eternalwonder143 Petition URL: Pennies of Promise Petition |
