He's coming back for the summer Options

I was with this guy ill call ( James) since Dec. 9th 2005 and stayed with him untill New Year of 2007. It was a constant roller coaster with him , i could hang out with him and be happy but by the end of the day he would bring me to tears. He would ditch me for his friends or stand me up on a movie night and then appologies when i tried to end it with him. Then one night when i wouldnt do it with him he said fine ill just take you home, he said he has nothing in common with me and that his life is 90% occupied by soccer. I was crushed how can you stay with someone for such a long time and say you have nothing in common with them. After that night i got e-mails that said he was sorry and i forgave him. He's in college but we still talk. He helps me out alot and he still acts like he cares. Hes coming back home in May and he wants to hang ...im afraid that the same thing will happen again. I dont want to live in the past and i tried having another bf to get him out of my head but i cant. I told him how i felt and he just said hes sorry for being such an a-hole and that i deserve better. I need some advice on what to do when he does come back home.
