my PROM frenzy, .. Options

So yeah Im really new and stuff but I'm here because I need some advice and what not.

My Prom is coming up this MAY 2007. Fun stuff.
But I have some issues about this...
There is this new dude at my school and he is so handsome and tall.[Thats a plus for me because I'm tall myself and need a date with height]
He plays football and I was like this dude seems like a good catch.
So I met him and stuff, but turns out he isn't going to be able to go to prom with me.
He is going to be in Las Vegas with his parents visiting family.
So I thought, you know what it's fine, I still have plenty of more time to get to know him. Prom is just one night. So I let that go.

Next issue is I like this new dude.
I like him in a sense that I want to get to know him even more and maybe "go out".He is kind of shy too, since he is new. He is dependent and goes to class and is on track, unlike most of these dudes at my school. But yesterday after school me and a friend were walking around campus just waiting till our rides came to go home. So we walk past the football field and some of the team was practicing and I said, "Oh look that's the guy I like!" And then she said oh him yeah he is sexy I like him too! So I'm standing there like nooo way. But get this..she has a boyfriend and they have been together for 17th months. So now I'm standing there like, DUDE YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND! So now I find out my good friend likes him too, and she already has a boytoy!

And the thing is, this boy is not a typical ghetto careless dude at out school. Soon as he came here I could tell he was not like most of the other guys at my school.[I go to a public school in oakland,ca] Now I'm like how am I going to try and talk to him and I have no classes with him, but my friend has two classes with him. So to me my chances to get to really know him is not a high as hers. And I really want to be a close friend to him!

What should I do about that?
Not the prom thing because that is just that, he won't be able to go;
But I want to get to know him more, before other messy females start to go crazy over him when football season starts and see oh fresh meat he is good and can play football. I don't want him with a female like that because I know I would never cheat or play games with any dude.

My questions:
What should I do?
He is the only dude I could see myself dating at this school!
I want to be his good friend, but how?
My friend likes him too and I have no classes with him!
What do I say to her?
