There are some words out there with certain connotations that they become awkward to use in certain sentences. For instance, I'm complete comfortable with saying "He's gorgeous!" But apparently, that makes me sound like I'm describing a baby and not a hunk-a-chunk of a man. On the other hand, calling a girl "handsome" is considered awkward because it's so widely used to describe males.

Name some others and discuss words like "gorgeous", won't you? tongue.gif

I use gorgeous to describe men too! Like Milo Ventimiglia shifty.gif ... completely gorgeous. I'm comfortable with it too! :) However, I rarely hear anyone at school say a man is gorgeous. mellow.gif

I think another word like this could be adorable. I've personally found most people say it when speaking of "cutesy" (haha, for lack of a better word) or sometimes child-like things. Such as teddy bears, puppies, and little kids. And if i say to some macho guy that i find them adorable (hypothetically), they might find it awkward and think that i view them in a brotherly/childish way, even. Although, adorable means "very attractive, charming" according to dictionary.com

But I'd definitely have to say that calling a woman handsome is awkward for me.

If I were describing a baby, I'd say adorable. I call people gorgeous all the time. But what I think is odd is calling a guy beautiful. My friend does that.

My friends and I use the word "gorgeous" to describe both men and woman. We also use "pretty" to describe good-looking boys.
