I fully understand what you meant. the word 'black' as a label isn't racist.

Its all how you use it. Demeaning and derogatory would be racist. Stereotyping would be racist.

I'm just using common sense.

Basically, what I am trying to say is that to one "black" person it might be racist while to another it might not be. You have to be careful what you say around people because they might take offence and it could seriously hurt their feelings.

Then they have to get over themselves because firstly, they have all the rights we do as Americans. Secondly, I live in America...a place where I can say what I want without having to fear any consequences headed my way.

Then what about the KKK?

Black people don't always have every right as another American, it depends on your location. A lot of blacks today are not wanted in a lot of areas therefore don't have rights in the certain location.

Secondly, you can't' always say what you want and never have any consequences thrown your way. People say this is a free country but truly it is not.

Legally citizens of the US have the same rights. What the citizens of a particular area do is up to them and not directly from the government.

Secondly, it takes a lot for the KKK to actually have meetings in a populated area. Yes, they might be able to get together and share about their beliefs, but most of the time if not all the time, they are the ones receiving the the punishments, verbal or legal.

You make it sound like there are such a small amount of minorities in our country.

So, blacks and mexicans and asians and whoever else have the same rights as everybody else in America.

Well, I'm bringing up the blacks because they were used for slavery long ago.

The Jews were slaves to Egyptians. I really don't think that slavery has any relevance in this topic.

I'm from Detroit and most the black people I know, I call them black. They don't mind. Being too set apart from other races is what pisses them off.

What the HELL is wrong in calling Black people BLACK? I am Black and I absolutely do NOT mind. What else should I be called (apart from my name)? 'Negro'?
Anybody that's got an issue with it should ... should ... I'm stuck.

I'm still shocked that people are offended.

Should Whites be offended?

Then again, people are different. We all have different reactions. Some might get offended.

Well, back in the day of slavery and even in the south today blacks are hated by whites and if I am not mistaken isn't there a team called the panthers or something that hate whites kinda like the kkk?

A lot of people aren't offended but I think if you don't know how the person is going to act, it's best just to not call them that cause a lot might be offended.

I don't get you. It might be because I'm European. What else should Black people be called? (Other than their names)

basically what i was saying is that, the name "African American" is a more universal, and respectful way to call a "black person" even if they're not U.S. born citizen.

Unless the subject is in fact, not at all African.

Then that's just the equivalent of calling a Korean, Chinese. Rather than calling them "Asian."

I agree. In most cases that is what black people are called from what I've seen & heard no matter where they live.

I am Black and proud of it.

Political Correctness goes too far sometimes. I understand the notion behind it, I really do. But within the Black community, those that prefer to be called African American are also those that don't fully embrace who they are, where they came from and how the entire Black community can progress. You generally find many older "African Americans" to stick together with the other uppity types and frown upon anyone who is struggling.

Whether you consider yourself to be Black, African American or a straight up nigga; whether you want social equality, reparations or racial surpremecy, its negligent to turn your back on your people. If you act like a nigga, you'll be treated like one. If you shy away from your roots, you'll be treated as a "traitor" of sorts. Whatever the case, its a matter of what people feel comfortable with.

The only race is the human race. We all just have a few societal differences.

I'm so glad there are people out there who feel that way. The very few black kids I know are all the exact opposite, so it's nice to hear another perspective.

Another problem is that if you're born in the US and you're black, then you're not at all African American. That term only denotes that you previously resided in Africa and moved to the US.

Not really. African American is a term referring to people's heritage and their citizenship. I'm Asian, but I'm born in America... and therefore, I'm referred to Asian, American, AND Asian American.

Personally, I don't think it's that big of a problem. Most of the time, I use "black" or if I know their from a certain background, I say "African American" or "Jamaican."

I don't simply assume that all blacks are from Africa, just like I'd hate it if people assumed all Asians are from China. Saying that somebody is black is a description - it balloons everybody who fits under that umbrella. I really don't think it's derogatory, discriminitive, etc. I mean... people call white people "white people" all the time... not caucasian or European or whatever.

Hm. I think it's funny that hispanics and indians are proud to call themselves "brown," blacks refer to themselves as "blacks," and white people say that they're "white" ... but you never go up to an Asian and call him "that yellow person." I might have to start doing that.

I think I've swayed off-topic.

Hi,

A few of your posts now in this forum have been very short, along the lines of 'I agree,' or 'a little bit of both sides' type things. While it is fine for you to agree with what has been posted, it would be better if your posts were mor emeaty, nd brought something new to the table, rather than merely 'taking a side', as it were, in line with the Debate Forum Guidelines.
