i came from a private school with uniforms.. damn, how i hated it!! they made girls wear skirts that was like a foot about the ground.. i really didn't like that cuz it was short!!! damned teachers and disciplinarian.. he was really scary.. he'd hit kids if they didn't wear the right stuff.. then we'd have to wear this ribbon thingy around our necks... damn.. it was such a hastle..
i kind of think that uniforms are okay, though, considering i had a bad experience with them.. uniforms make things look for organized.. like in class pictures.. if everyone wore what they want, then the picture looks messy.... and uniforms make it easier.. i mean, when you get up in the morning, you don't have to go through your closet and choose what to wear cuz it's set already.
but then again, freedom of expression through fashion... so i really can't say anything about it..
haha.. i just remembered that we had this as a topic for debate club.. helluva funny.... i was supposed to be pro uniforms and i came up with something about non-conformists... hahaha...!

nope. there should be a slight dress code, so there arn't kids wlaking aorund naked. But I mean people should wear what they want. They say it helps control popularity facotrs, from wearing lables, ect. But it doesn't! lol those retards. They should let the kids decide. We are the ones who have to goto the hell every day

school uniforms should not be a standard for all schools it should depend upon the location and the condition of the community. Some people cant afford uniforms and rich folk's kids should get structure and not be able to use their clothes as a way to rebel.

what is wrong with being naked? i think everyone should be naked. it would make our country less obese. but for safety purposes there should be some form of protection like when cooking or building a house.

If you wonder about creativity and self-expression, please refer to a few pages back where I said that if you really think uniforms will stop you from being creative, then that means that you're not very creative to begin with.

resurecting dead topics...

consider:

the uniforms are not decided by kids. if kids voted on the uniforms, then maybe it would be ok.

uniforms cannot destroy social groups... they won't even weaken them.

and if the students wear uniforms, should not the teachers?

Considered.

Kids may very well vote on having their own lunch hours or what classes they should/shouldn't take. A bit far-fetched, but I think you get the idea.

QUOTE

Considered.

So what's the harm in them if they do not faze social groups? However, I think they do prevent at least one way a kid could get made fun of.

QUOTE

Sure. Why not? But why should teachers be in uniform as well in your opinions?

I really forgot what my points were on this before your brought this topic back from the archive... but oh well...

to prevent people from expressing theirselves

cons:

people will make fun of u b/c of uniforms

no.
yes, they prevent the "omg you wear cool clothes you're popular!" thing..but it'll happen anyway. as you get older, it's not so much about clothes, but who you're friends with.

i don't think every school should have uniforms, but i mean they should have a dress code, like the school two lights down frm mine don't have uniforms and its coed, but my school's misson statement cleary states that they want us to feel like we are our own person and to let us express our induviuallity (SP?) but then they give us uniforms...its really gay how coed schools have dress codes but private all girls schools have uniforms...

First, how can preventing someone from "expressing himself/herself" be a good thing?

QUOTE
not being able to express him/herself

If you think the clothes make the man/woman/boy/girl, then you're shallow. Self-expression wise, uniform is just a minor setback. If one is truly creative, then he/she will figure out other ways to stand out.

QUOTE
people will make fun of u b/c of uniforms

Why would people make fun of your uniform when they're wearing the same shit? If you mean that people outside of school will make fun of you for wearing uniforms, then they're just stupid people. Why would anyone find it amusing that someone else is in uniform? That kind of people do not have a life.

But then again, why would you want to wear your uniform outside of school? Wouldn't you get tired of wearing it in school and outside school?

But we're obviously talking about types of clothes, not no clothes... thank goodness.

Just to make things clear though, do you really think clothes make the man?

yes, because a well dressed individual makes a better impression than a badly dressed individual.

the clothes are what you see, and we are a visual society. we have TV shows of people who set the standard of what we're suppost to be.

but this isn't the real reason i'm against school uniforms.

in school, you are just another kid to most teachers. at some colleges, your professor doesn't even know your name and you use your social security number to identify your tests.

adding uniforms will simply encourage the lumping of all students together.

take for instance, my high school. it's got a very lenient dress code. the teachers are rather lenient. we don't have people walking around nearly naked. the people who do that are called slutty and so common decency prevails.

we don't have gangs, people don't use the clothes to discriminate. you don't have to wear something to be in with the popular crowd. it's not what you wear, it's who you know.

so the point is, uniforms aren't needed. they might be good some ways, but they have a price, and thier benifits can be come by other ways.

Oh, I agree.

So wouldn't you say that uniforms would make someone look more kempt and clean than someone wearing a short-shorts and a spaghetti straps or someone with baggy jeans that shows falls to half their buttocks with bandana?

Students would want to stand out other ways. When I was in uniforms, everyone would make himself/herself stand out by competing to see who do better academically. There were those who stood out because they are good at sports or knowledgable in other ways... etc.

Really, I think the argument that claims "uniforms limit self-expression" is overused and completely, and utterly untrue. Also by saying such you really demean the level of creativity and underestimate the intelligence of those who wear uniform.

Then if I were the policy maker or the dress code enforcer, I wouldn't really push uniforms at your school unless parents feel that it's necessary.

And actually, when I was in high school, clothes certainly mattered in membership to the popular crew. Maybe there are different types of popularity? Who knows?

Uniforms aren't needed, but what makes wearing normal clothes instead of uniforms needed?

yes we should.
this way i wont have to pick something to wear all the time.

and about that individuality and expressing yourself, well, there's other ways to do that. like music or art. and stuff.

i think not...i think people should be able to wear what they want in school because it shows their personality & makes the person different & individual.
