this question has always been flowing in my mind..

why do girls get more moody/emotional on their period? is it even real that most girls get more "moody/emotional" on their period?

thoughts about this?

(sorry if there's another topic about this =x)

Actually, most girls get moody and emotional the week prior to their period; that's why it's called PMS (premenstrual syndrome).

Something about imbalance of hormones.

http://www.womenshealth.gov/faq/pms.htm#b
QUOTE
The causes of PMS are not clear. It is linked to the changing hormones during the menstrual cycle. Some women may be affected more than others by changing hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. Stress and emotional problems do not seem to cause PMS, but they may make it worse.

Diagnosis of PMS is usually based on your symptoms, when they occur, and how much they affect your life.

So you see, there's not really a solid reason why girls get mad, but as you know, menstrual cycles and anything associated with puberty has a lot to do with certain hormones that are released at the time. And these hormones could have effects on your mood and temper.

On Wikipedia, it says that 75% of women of reproductive age will experience PMS during their lifetime, so yes, most females can get more moody and emotional.

There's a lot of extra estrogen and progesterone in the woman's body and it causes mood swings and stuff. Something like that.

Not everyone gets PMS, and in my first year of psych, I found out that PMS isn't exactly a real "physical" syndrome. Instead, it's all psychological.

And, I would think that having blood come out of your vagina would make a lot of girls irritated because frankly, it's rather annoying.

I read that PMS isn't psychological at all. It's being recognized as physical these days.

I get it sometimes. I'm more emotional than violent and angry though. It could very well be the depression as well, so... :/

I don't really get mad when I get it but I know some of my friends have that temper problem around their "time of the month." But I'm thinking it's just the pain and some have it worse than others..sometimes it is unbearable so we get pissed off easily. What can we say, we hate pain. Haha.

The cause of PMS is due to the drastic drop in hormonal levels. After a girl's period, it takes about 7 or so days for the eggs in the ovaries to mature. On the 14th day, generally in the middle of the cycle, ovulation occurs. As the egg is released from the ovaries, a hormone called progesterone is also released. The body then prepares itself for a baby, which requires high doses of estrogen & progesterone in order to substain life. If the egg is not fertilized, then the endometrium sheds (period) and the hormones basically plummet because they are not needed. Due to the drastic decline, girls are entitled to a few days of fuss before menstruating.

eta; Ever heard of postapardum depression? It's basically the same concept on a lower level.

Oh yeah, that too. And I get really pale when I'm on my period (like my lips). I should probably drink more water.

I second that, but I used tampons for swimming and it always felt like they were falling out but they weren't; I was just paranoid. I'm not use to tampons and knowing me, I'll end up getting TSS because I'll just forget about it.

I'm moody in general lol, but I am more short tempered right before, and during. During is just cuz periods suck, and the world should suffer with me ...
