How serious do you guys think Promise Rings are if you were to exchange them with your boyfriend/girlfriend? And how soon into a relationship would you exchange it?

Basically I'm asking what are the implications of exchanging Promise Rings....and the timing of it.

Thanks =]

Well if its something you strongly believe in then its something serious. I dont know how old you are but, when If you are older like I or lots of us, you will realize that the word PROMISE is very very serious. I did the whole promise ring thing and it was probably 18 months after we started dating. Its a very serious commitment.

I will honestly say that if you are younger then 17, then none of this applies because I am a strong, strong believer that you have to be over 18 to even hold a an actual serious relationship, not because you "have" to be. But because the mind doesnt begin to understand the meaning of Love when you near adult maturity and or have at least lost a serious love.

But yea, anywho, what kind of promise are you "bonding" with this ring?

I would think of it as like an engagment, sorta.
Like it's your promise to get married in the future. But that's just the way I see it _smile.gif

I'm 18......we're thinking of promising to be serious and together in our relationship. We plan to get it for our one year anniversary....=]

i would wait a while after giving it, i mean it IS something serious.
that's like engaging, in a way. or saying 'hey, i want to engage to you, can't now, but promise to.'

I have one, my boyfriend calls it our pre-engagement ring. He gave it to me kind of early, after 6 months of dating- but we went through a lot to be in our relationship. A lot of my friends said it was to early, but it was the first time he said i love you, so i knew we were serious. Besides we are going on our year and a half and have started saving up for our own place, so i know it was the right choice to accept it.

I have to agree with KielReese about being over 18 to exchange them. While a promise ring sounds kinda childish- they are a serious thing. Not many relationships last past high school into your adult lives.

But as long as you love each other and it is a serious relationship i say go for it.

Me and my boyfriend didn't exchange rings- he just gave me one....i guess i should buy him one. Oops.

Here is a picture of my ring, just incase anyone was interested.

Promise rings are pretty serious. Like everyone's said before me, they're basically saying "I love you and want to be with you forever even if we're not married now." Just one step before engagement. You should be together at least a year before you give them to each other so you can really know each other and make sure.

I think in order to give someone a promise ring, you need to be mature and responsible enough to actually KEEP that promise [eventually getting married]. therefore, no earlier than 18 for me. i'm 16 years old and me and my boyfriend have been going out for almost a year and he told me he's getting me a ring for our anniversary. it's not a promise ring because we're way too young for that. i know that i want to be with him forever and vice versa..if only we were older. i don't need some stupid piece of jewelry to know that.

ah...promise rings.....

yeah they are pretty damn serious.
It's bascially the ring before the engagement ring.
And I mean, I think they are great.
But they can put a lot of pressure on the couple
Especially if they are young.

Giving someone a promise ring basically is the step before the engagement ring, so you have to be pretty serious with them.
As for timing, it differs with each relationship. Some people date for over 5 years, and aren't ready for marriage. Some couples date for a year and are walking down the aisle. But regardless, just be sure you are ready...I mean, promise rings are serious. You are seriously thinking of marrying that person, and i believe you gotta know them for a while before you make any sort of promise. Also, I think exchanging promise rings at such a n early age can be dangerous.....
