Wireless Router, so confused |

So I bought the D-Link Wireless router and we already have a D-Link router that is like not wireless and is hooked up to two computers (the desktop and laptop). So I'm like what they hey, lets put wireless on the laptop cause it is a laptop so I put the cd in and it says that a router is already connected so I'm like ok, I'll take the wire that is connecting the router to the internet box and instead of putting it in the D-Link non wireless router, I'll put it in the laptop so it can configure it, but no it's not working and I don't know what to do because I don't understand any of it. There are no instructions and it says just put in the cd and your good to go but I am so lost right now.

Hook it up like so:
Wall jack <-> wired router <-> wireless router Then try enabling wireless on your laptop and installing any necessary software from that CD. |

I tried that but it said when I put the CD in that I already have a router installed and I needed to take it out to put a diffrent one on.

You probably already have the necessary software installed (I don't even know what software you'd have to install to connect to a router, but hell, Windows is f**ked up so whatever). Just turn on the wireless router, enable your laptop's wireless card, and connect to it.

I don't think I have a wireless card, but like I can steal wireless internet from the library so I dont think I need one.

Well, you have a wireless card, it's just built into the computer, then.
The point is, turn on the wireless router and connect to it like the wireless network in your library. |

I tried that too, but when I did, there was a link that came up in the wireless networking function but it would not let me connect to the internet or anything.

Oh, I see. It doesn't want you to have more than one router connected in series like that.
You can do a few things. Easiest would be to just use the wireless router. Most wireless routers also have hardwired ports (for non-wireless devices, such as your desktop machine, to connect to). Just swap the wireless router with your existing router, plug the desktop into one of the wireless router's hardwired ports, turn on/configure the router, and connect to it. You can use both routers in tandem but things get a bit more complicated. |

When I click view wireless connections, it lets me connect, but when I try to go online, it wont let me.

Yeah I had this problem a while back when setting up my wireless router. mipadi is correct about it not letting you connect the routers in series like that. I couldnt connect to the internet despite being able to connect to the wireless signal of my router, and it turned out that my modem had a built in router, weird I know. It took me a while and alot of configuring but I got it to work.
Easiest is, as mipadi said, connect straight to the wireless router, assuming its a router and not an access point. |

Yeah, it's plugged into the modem and my computer does connect to the wireless network, but its just not allowing me to use the internet. Ah, so confused

Your router is broadcasting a signal, but its useless because it wont connect to the internet because its plugged into an existing router, either the one you had hooked up or one built into your modem.

Ok ^ so I understood that because when I just plug in the wireless router with an ethernet cable, there is a connection but since there is no ethernet cable to it there is no internet. Now when I do plug in the ethernet cable, it still does not work and I don't know how to configure it.

If your modem does have routing capabilities (some do, some don't) then you probably need to disable those. But I'd wager that's not the problem, since your other router worked fine.

Put it in the same way your old router is in. |
