At least 6 dead in Amish school shooting
POSTED: 1:20 p.m. EDT, October 2, 2006

NICKEL MINES, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A gunman killed six people at a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday morning in Pennsylvania's bucolic Lancaster County, and several others were taken to hospitals with injuries, authorities said.

"So far, six confirmed dead, and the helicopters are pulling into (Lancaster General Hospital) like crazy," Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said.

It was unclear if the shooter was among the six. State Police Cpl. Ralph Striebig said earlier that the shooter was dead. (Watch helicopter video from the scene of the shooting -- 1:00 )

Three girls, all in critical condition with gunshot wounds, were admitted to Lancaster General Hospital, spokesman John Lines told WGAL-TV.

Officials at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center confirmed that victims also were being admitted there. A spokeswoman said the hospital anticipated more than one patient but did not know how many.

Police surrounded the one-room school late Monday morning, and the Lancaster County 911 Web site reported that dozens of emergency units were dispatched to a "medical emergency" at 10:45 a.m.

Two hours later, about three dozen people in traditional Amish clothing, hats and bonnets stood near the small school building speaking to one another, several young people and authorities.

At least two ambulances had left the scene, and at least one person was taken on a stretcher to a medical helicopter.

I am suprized nobody made a topic about this yet , its not that far from where i live so all news and headliners are about this shooting. but Yesterday afternoon 3 little girls died from an amish school in Lancaster PA. And last night 2 more died from gun shot wounds. The gunman shot 7 girls in total.

The gunman decided to take out his frustration on a one room amish school. he let all the boys go and then decided to keep girls younger than 13, they dont know his reasons for this but they think it maybe because of molestation of younger children that happened 20 years ago. In his last conversation with his wife he confessed that he molested 2 kids from their family 20 years ago and that he planned to do it again. They think that this triggered his anger, he was very quiet about this and he planned it very well.

But its sad that he did this just cause it was an amish school. It makes me wonder how safe are our schools, do kids have to be afraid to go to school everyday? and to think we trust ourselves being there when we are there half of the day... think about all this stuff thats going on, colorado shootings, sexual abuse, molestation these are things all going on at our schools.

I live in York, the town right next to it. We've already had two other school shootings in our area (thank goodness not my school), why another? sad.gif

i live in jersey and it is scary, there's been 2 close calls of shootings in my former high school luckily they were stoped because of all the signs from the kids. but still it is extremely serious and frightening.

and this attack was the nation's third deadly school shooting in a week.

this world today isn't a safe place any more it isn't as simple like back in the day.. and it's sad what the world's becoming.. where's the love. cry.gif

I don't know how people can live with such anger and frustration contained in them. In my opinion, anger is the emotion easiest to let go of.

I was about to post the Amish school shooting up when I saw this topic.

It's so sad that a single person can think of doing such a cruel thing. To Amish children too. Children... the one group of people in this world that is truly vulnerable and incapable of doing harm.

Think of how much anger that must have been stored inside him to bring him to do this.. It seriously makes me sick.

i was at my boyfriend's house yesterday when it happened and his mom told us about it. we talked about it in detail in history class today and it makes me so sad to hear about tragic events like this. it seems as though the biggest school shootings happen in the places you'd never expect....

YOU LIVE IN THE SAME TOWN STEFAN DOES. [/random]

But out of all seriousness, yeah, this has been on the news nonstop in Pittsburgh as well (we're not that far from it). sad.gif It's terrible. I really don't know what else to say.. I feel so bad for all the families that have been grieving due to all of these shootings. May they rest in peace, and I really hope nothing more happens this week.

From today's news, it said that he was a child molester back when he was a kid himself. He had molested his family members or something, and now he had dreams of it again and the urge came back. So that's why he did it. i find it so depressing how somebody can just shoot kids like that. Not to mention them being Amish. =[ He didn't deserve to kill himself. He deserved to live in prison rather than run away from his crime.

Thats so horrible. sad.gif

Yesterday during English class, for like the first time ever, we spent like 30 minutes discussing the Amish people and their lifestyles. Then this happens. How ironic.

Poor girls and their families...

It seems like there's been a ton of shootings at schools lately.

its weird cause i have mixed feelings about the gunman, he never showed it, he kept it well hidden that he was frustrated and angry at himself and then he goes and does this, at times i feel bad but then again did he have to resort to this, he could of just killed himself.

its so freaking sad that 5 innocent little children were killed, i feel like crying cause its just so bad, I dont feel anger i just feel sorry for him and i feel even more sorrow for the families, i mean they try to escape using technologies by living such a simple life, and someone had to go abuse that, it makes me sick.

It seems like going into schools and killing kids is a trend now. That was like what the 3rd one in the nation in less than a week. It's sad. It really is.
I guess 20 years ago (when he was 12) he raped some of his distant family members and no one knew about it, not even his wife. And I guess he felt guilty... I don't agree with the theory of he was guilty because when you're guilty you usually don't try to kill 10 kids.

Of course, any time this happens it's horrible. What makes it more horrible is the fact that now it has sent off a chain of other shootings, copy-cat ones. sad.gif But it really scares how in this one, he was extremely methodical and precise, he'd planning it for so many years.
