Yeah, it's debateable wether or not a teacher should let his/her students read it. pinch.gif My teacher shouldn't have. They hear the word naked and boom. They start laughing like hyenas. mellow.gif

In 7th grade I was touched by the Giver. There were people who were immature, but I ignored them. I understand and felt sad about the book. It really got me thinking whether I should enjoy my life or want more..something better.. but then is that "better" really better? oh my...

Aw the maturity of some middle schoolers. I can't say that all high schoolers are better. shrug.gif

Oh and Bethany it is about a world opposite of ours. It is kind of difficult to describe. When I say opposite I don't mean upside down.

In the "ideal" world into which Jonas was born, everybody has sensibly agreed that well-matched married couples will raise exactly two offspring, one boy and one girl. These children's adolescent sexual impulses will be stifled with specially prescribed drugs; at age 12 they will receive an appropriate career assignment, sensibly chosen by the community's Elders. This is a world in which the old live in group homes and are "released"--to great celebration--at the proper time; the few infants who do not develop according to schedule are also "released," but with no fanfare. Lowry's development of this civilization is so deft that her readers, like the community's citizens, will be easily seduced by the chimera of this ordered, pain-free society. Until the time that Jonah begins training for his job assignment--the rigorous and prestigious position of Receiver of Memory--he, too, is a complacent model citizen. But as his near-mystical training progresses, and he is weighed down and enriched with society's collective memories of a world as stimulating as it was flawed, Jonas grows increasingly aware of the hypocrisy that rules his world. With a storyline that hints at Christian allegory and an eerie futuristic setting, this intriguing novel calls to mind John Christopher's Tripods trilogy and Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl. Lowry is once again in top form--raising many questions while answering few, and unwinding a tale fit for the most adventurous readers.

sounds cool.

It's pretty deep unless you take if for another book you have to read for another assignment. You may not enjoy it as much then.

Yeah. It didn't have like.. volume, I guess. I just wasn't interested to begin with, and there wasn't that much of a plot to me, at least.

I liked Perks of being a Wallflower better. It actually isn't the same as the Giver. Really different but if you're a teen through your hard times.. MUST READ

I heard it was a very "girly" book.

Well it's about a weird boy liking his friend who's a girl. It's not really girly. To tell you the truth, if I was a boy I would've loved it as much. It targets both genders. But I guess it appeals to the girls due to maturity eyebrowes.gif

btw it's not all about him liking the girl. It's also based on his perspective as a "wallflower" in high school. A boy who watches and understands and never asks.
