So? Does that automatically cancel it from being a sport? If so, why? Also, its not the exact same thing because bands do get better or worse throughout the season so rehearsals are just like football practices.

I'm pretty in between. Why it is: Its athletic and competitive, isn't that all there is to it? Why it isn't: No ball, and its just.....band. You don't need to have a ball for it to become a sport (swimming). I consider marching band more of a past time because it's more band/music than anything else. Their top purpose isn't to be athletic. |

what do you mean 'there is no ball?'
well, obviously, i know what you mean, but why would that disqualify it from being a sport |

What about basketball? The same rules, the same objective, the same players on the same team, the same drills.

Well, at my school taking band counts as taking p.e. So...I guess it is a sport to us.

But what difference would it make or not pertaining it to a sport? Why must a sport be "practiced" and not "rehearsed?"

You can't have a presentation of a basketball game. Rehearsals are usually for a performance or more formal presentation. It's planned.

So where in the definition of a sport does it state that it must not be planned?

Okay, after about one hour of hot debate on AIM about this, I have ended on the fact that marching is not athletic, yet he thinks so. Marching is discipline, not a sport.

i guess it could be considered a sport.
it's *kind of* like dance... because you do arm movements and you walk in patterns. plus you're carrying big instruments, so there's physical activity there. but in a way it isn't as well, just like ping pong shouldn't be considered a sport. |

Why the hell has this been moved to debate?
It's not a debate. It's not even a particularly good topic. I made it when the sports forum was new, for the sake of having something there before everything got moved. |

Our school Marching band has their ridiculously heavy outfits & enormous hats.
They probably sweat more than the football players. Its totally a sport. |

It counts as a gym credit, you know why?
It's sweaty (infact very sweaty), and hard. You have to have your shoulders JUST RIGHT, your feet in perfect movement (and it gets really confusing because left means right), you're holding your instrument straight in front of you. I dare anyone to take something as heavy as a clarinet and hold it straight in front of them without having it rest on anything for an hour and still say it's not a sport. As BonneVache just said the outfits are hell. 4 people have passed out just this year and school started a week ago, the reason was they locked they're legs too long. Why? Because we have to stand in attention for 20 minutes, if someone moves the clock starts over. Marching band also keeps you in good shape (unless you're a jerk drum major and all you have to do is yell "left left left right left"). Not to mention it's hella hard trying to keep 6/8 time when you're marching in 4/4. marching band is not a sport you walk the same way everytime you play the song written on the sheet there are no choices like whether to shot or throw something it's justt like your a machine You have to memorize your music, usually. Also, try being a machine tell me how it goes k? There are many choices, especially at competitions. Educate yourself. I don't think it's a sport when you're band is only doing it to entertain the crowd, but if you're in a band that goes to competitions that's when it becomes a sport. |

That's just ridiculous. Are you a musician? |

And a clarinet is so heavy, right? ![]() You proved it was physically challenging, and it takes hard work but it still doesn't make it a sport. What's the big deal about labelling something "SPORT" or "NOT SPORT". It's still the same ol' thing right? Enjoy it for what it is. Not a sport. Someone made new topic about it in the debate forum, and it was merged. Yes, yes it is heavy. It doesn't really matter to me about it being a sport or not, I was just spewing off my opinions. |
