Yeah. It's competitive and it takes hard work out there. There is no rule that says every sport has to be very physical.

Yes, I consider marching band to be a sport. All that physical stuff we do. HECK, it better be considered a sport.

^but it's still not a sport...a sport has to have goals...players...action....it has to have variables. in marching band you march a show the same way everytime. you learn something, get it down and perform it. a sport can't be something you memorized. there's no doubt that it's physically demanding..but c'mon the halftime show to a football game is not a sport.
*

Depends on what you're doing, I've seen points of where it's a face off, where you literally stand there and have to do something better than the other school.

Goals=Scores

Players=PLAYERS

Action=A show where you are physically and mentally challenged.

You play a show the same way everytime, And what do you call "football plays" I'm sure memorizing plays and doing them the same way evertime has nothing to do with it. Where you learn it, get it down, and basically perform it. So, a sport CAN be something that's memorized.

Sure, you can say that the Halftime game isn't competitive, (Even though even in the stands (little known fact) We actually throw taunts at eachother in music, somtimes see who can play one song the fastest, strongest, loudest. We actually do this)

What about Gymnastics? They memorize a routine, and perform it. Olympic SPORT. *Cough*

doing sit ups is physical.  is it a sport? no.

Who said anything about debating? blink.gif

I think it should be considered a sport though. We do too much work, physically and mentally.

Marching band is definately a sport. We compete, train, and exert more concentration than almost everyother sport out there. If an olympic sport can consist of sending hot metal stones across ice, marghing band should qualify.
Besides, we grow closer than the army, we are smarter than the football players and cheerleaders combined, and most bands have their own football team that could beat their schools official team, we rock, and it is totally a sport

Well, I don't find alot of sports amazing, does that make them less sporty? no.

You CAN do it, you just don't.

The fact remains that every sport memorizes something and hones skills to work the game. Plays, Movments, all of this to make a game work.

Same with marching band.

I don't really see that the big deal is. Sport or not, marching band is still not only a lot of fun and a great activity, not to mention an activity that requires skill and some physical effort. Whether it's a sport or not is pointless; being a sport would not make it superior that it is, nor would declaring it not a sport making it inferior to what it is. I don't see why the magic status of "sport" makes it any more or less of an activity.

I don't think it's a sport--which, I'd like to emphasize, if I didn't do it enough above, does not make it less of an activity. It's just a different class. Marching band isn't a game, you don't score points, you don't try to win. (Yes, I know many marching bands compete, but competing does not automatically equal a sport; one can compete in chess, school achievements, or Odyssey of the Mind, and those are not sports.) It's not a sport like golf, or football, or baseball. Again, this doesn't make it less of an activity--certainly not inferior to those sports--it just means it is classified differently.

I do agree with you that it does seem to be classified differently, but it really comes down to the definition of a sport. Any by definition, a sport is a...

Since marching band fits the category, it should be considered a sport.

In my band, we run 1/2 a mile at every rehearsal (we have a two rehearsals a day for two weeks before school starts). We also do 100 crunches (only in the morning rehearsal) and so much more cardio.

You try "walking" of marching at 200 beats a minute!

Of course it doesn't make it superior. I can't stand most sports, as it happens. I was merely curious to see if anyone had anything intelligent to say

QUOTE(brownsugar08 @ Aug 10 2005, 4:30 PM)
^ I hardly doubt your band marches their show at 200 beats per minute.

Is that what you were saying?
*

yeah...and if they do, it can't be for very long at all. 3 seconds of 200bpm does not equal much
