I just got a used laptop off of ebay and everything works great.... except for internet explorer. Every website I go to, the background color/background image won't show. I've gone through all the internet options (as well as my friend, and my dad), but we can't seem to get it to work. I can change the set background color, but I can't get it to "un-set"....

So, I downloaded firefox... I'm using it right now...
and firefox isn't displaying background either. I know its not the website, because i go to them on my dad's computer, and the bgs show up. I'm thinking its the computer... by why would it do that? I thought you could only edit stuff like that in internet options.... |

maybe your color options are wrong.
check that you're on true color (24 bit) |

firefox doesn't work either? I think it's that computer. Heh, agreed. Is there anyway you can get in contact with the seller? That could be the very reason they sold it. There might be something else wrong too. It's probably best to ask. |

I can try to contact the seller... didn't mention any problems with the laptop in the listing, but you can't trust that the listing is completely accurate... Is there any way to find out if all my reinstalling disks work and if I have the ones I need? Later: haha, I got on aim, and bg colors for my ims work. yay to aim. |

Ha, yeah. I've bought many things on Ebay and Half.com and not completely accurate is an understatement, lol. Hmm... Who makes the laptop you bought? Is it Dell or Alienware or something? Try going to their web site. They might have a list on there, or you could call their tech support. They may be able to help you with the problem too.

Dell- I've tried going to their website, but I can't find a # to call... I posted my problem on their support forum, no one's replied... |

Before you reformat, or before you use firefox. Run adaware and antivirus, then if the problem still keeps up. Reinstall internet explorer, go to Start, Control Panel, then Add Remove Programs, Add/Remove windows components, then choose internet explorer. You will need the Windows CD to do the reinstall. Also, make sure you have the internet explorer updates installed. That could be a BIG problem.
Installing firefox will not fix the problem, FireFox uses some of the same framework as Internet Explorer. I wish people would stop using that as a excuse to fix problems that can be fixed in maybe 10 mins tops. You cant really use a browser that can barely read PHP or has problem with almost ANY billing system. |

^ Yup, and FireFox will usually fix it in 5 minutes.
Hey, Christiantean, I have a Dell too. I'll look in the owners manual and see if it has a number and I'll PM it to you. |

Actually, I have had many customer come to me and tell us how FireFox will stretch the actual billing system out of proportion, and not only that it will not link back to paypal and or storm pay. So its not just my PC that does it. And well in this instance, firefox didn't fix anything. Just like everything else, from popups, which firefox has problems with, with PHP, unlike IE, and with Java and many others. firefox takes regular code, such as QUOTE <script language="JavaScript"> VIH_DisplayFormat = "You are visiting from:<br>IP Address: %%IP%%<br>Host: %%HOST%%"; </script> <script language="JavaScript" src="http://www.hashemian.com/js/visitorIPHOST.js.php"></script> and screws it up so bad that your website will have SSL errors and can throw off the alignment of images around it. So bad that you have to download extensions and update some firefox files so that it will work. BTW, the dell support number is 1-800-999-3355 |

the fact is, firefox just has less shit that targets it.
and that's what, essentially, makes it better. if you design a site that's internet explorer only, i will find an alternate. damn shame people won't code to standards. |

It's like we've experienced two different things here. Your information is a lot different then what I've known for years. FireFox works fine with my PayPal account. Also, I used to play RuneScape a lot, which uses Java and some other Java games. It never once gave me problems. Just sounds like you and a few others are having the problems. But oh well. I'll stick with FireFox and you can work with whatever it is you use. That way, we're both happy! This isn't a topic on FireFox anyway, so lets get back on target. |
