OKay did some research...
ends up people back in the day believed the soul was in the head. So when we sneezed people believed the soul left and we said god bless you as a prayer so evil spirits could not go inside u before your sould returned.

Another thing I read is that there was a epidemic where people died and sneezing was a symptom so the pope ordered people to say god bless you as a prayer to bless them.

Now its more out of politeness then religion.

the way i grew up its was ALWAYS proper to say "bless you" to anyone who sneezes or "kuyah, ateh, lolo, lola etc" to anyone who was your elder (filipino's can relate) ...

and its true what justsomeboi said...i asked one of my friend and he said the same thing sorta "when we sneeze our heart stops for a split second and it gives demons a chance to enter our bodies so ppl say bless you so demons wont bother you"

mainly because it's a form of mannerism .. saying `bless you` when one sneezes is being polite ..

i've also heard from others that it just means you're wishing someone good health after one sneezes ..

and what the other members have said above was what i've also heard =]

Your heart stops when you sneeze. So people say 'bless you' to save your heart from stopping permanently. Also, it's just polite.

What if someone sneezed... and they didn't believe in God or anything from the Bible.... and you said "God Bless You".... that would sort of be like not being polite to that person's beliefs or lack of... or thoughts or opinions... a 'bless you' always works fine... I just think 'god bless you' is too long for a sneeze especially if it's 3 sneezes in a row and then... yeah... _unsure.gif

i think they say it because back in the middle ages when the plague was around and stuff, sneezing probably meant they were sick and going to die soon. Like the meaning behind the seemingly harmless "Ring a ring o' Roses" children's nursery rhyme is death caused by the plague.

Ring a ring o' Roses,
A pocketful of posies,
Atishoo! Atishoo!
We all fall down

"We all fall down", meaning fall down dead

I think it is ashes, when they burned the bodies. and i think the pocketful line is about a pocket full of roses that they would put to their nose to not smell the foul odors

it's japanese superstition that one sneeze means that someone is spreading a rumour about you, two sneezes in a row and it's a bad rumour, and three sneezes in a row means you've got a cold

when you sneeze it used to be thought that it was a sign of a person being posessed by a spirit (that entered the body when you yawn, hence covering your mouth when you yawn) you'd say bless you because they were trying to get the spirit out of you biggrin.gif
