Banned Book Week!

IT'S BANNED BOOK WEEK! What's your school/library doing for it? What's your favorite banned book? _smile.gif Mine, of course, is Fight Club. Our school librarian is throwing a raffle (I can't recall the prize) to all that submit the name of their favorite banned book. What's sad is the fact that out of a school of 3,000+ people, the only three people to have submitted entries thus far is myself and my two friends. laugh.gif They also showcased a bunch of banned books outside.

What banned week?

I don't believe we have that here. Our school is packed full like way over the limit with over 2000+ students, although were you live it may be bigger and we have to divide all these people amoung 3 schools. I don't think we would get many people if we had this though. Not many people around here like to read. -shrugs- their odd.

No no no - it's a national thing! You can read more about it here. This is quite depressing.

We never had that at our school.

Some of the books on this list should be banned for sheer wretchedness, namely Heart of Darkness and Their Eyes Were Watching God.

No, not from highschools or the entire country. In certain areas there are certain books that are banned because a particular person or group challenged a book. I don't think it's possible with our country to have a book banned in the entire nation.

My school isn't doing anything. Last year, though, my Honors English class did a whole project on banned books. I read 1984, and I loved it. Then, we had to write a paper on whether or not we agree with the fact that it was banned.

Reading Lord of the Flies right now. I don't know if it's out of sheer coincidence, or if my teacher selected it just for this week.

Haha, I love this week. I love seeing all the silly reasons that people have for banning it, like Harry Potter! How bad could it be? I literally spent like half an hour with my friends just sitting down and reading why they're banned.

I've heard of it! My English class is reading To Kill a Mockingbird right now. But it's sad how books are banned around the country. So many kids are deprived of such great literature.

I know..it is because many morons out there don't understand how great the literature is so they just go out and ban it...damn fascist

I have never heard of a week dedicated to it...

I have read so many banned books for school then, so I guess my school doesn't ban books?

School Requirements:
-To Kill a Mockingbird
-The Great Gatsby
-Catcher in the Rye
-Of Mice and Men
-Their Eyes Were Watching God
-Animal Farm

I have also read Charlotte's Web for fun.

The Satanic Verses, by Salman Rushdie, caused a fatwe authorized by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran, against the author and the publication of his book. Many people died, and his books are banned in almost all Islamic nations, as well as in many western ones as well.

However, I haven't read it, and I've heard from some people that its a bit overrated. Has anyone read it who's willing to give me some feedback?

I just realized that though I'm only on the second page of the Books forum, the last post before mine is from October 2006. Wtf is going on, POST IN BOOKS MORE.

We have this zombie-manga book, I think titled "The Abandoned" that is about to be banned. As soon as my friend returns it to the library..

if he ever does. ;)

But usually, my school is open to all other books. I guess there was just too much homosexuality and dead people in this book :D
