same here. I use it, but I should stop. We had a whole discussion on this about misusing the word, 'gay' --and now I know how much I've hurt people saying it.

So the term gay seems to be thrown around lightly amongst society today. People say it without even knowing. "Wow...that's so gay." "You're GAY!" "But that's gayyyy." But they misuse the term. Do you think gay people take offense when this term is used about so lightly? Why don't we all just start saying, "wow...that's so straight."

The term gay means happy. Calling a homosexual gay is a misuse of the word also.

But the definition after "happy" is "homosexual," so it's not a misuse of the word.

I am strongly against using the word "gay" to describe things that we don't like. "Gay" is not a synonym for "stupid" or "bad."

Most gays have probably gotten used to hearing the term used that way and resign themselves to it, but it probably hurts them inside. I've read how some homosexual people were afraid to come out because of the bashing they'd receive from their peers, all of whom frequently used the word "gay" to describe things. Being repressed because of something like that...it's got to be tough.

Well most people take gay as homosexual. To most people thats weird to be homosexual. So people just say thats gay.

Well, I can't tell you if each individual gay person is offended by it or not. I know some who are and some who aren't.

I object to it because I find it offensive, and frankly because it makes the user seem pretty f**king stupid. Find a word which actually means something in context.

I'm going to go ahead and merge this with the thread in the lounge, because you can't really debate as to whether or not people are offended by it...

I guess its just cause society makes it so that being straight is the default (woah, I said default) sexual orientation. Otherwise, people would be using the word straight.

I've never actually used the word gay unless I was talking about homosexual people or talking about being happy or something.

I really could care less about the use of the word gay. I rarely say it, and I don't care when I say it. Truth is, most guys are still offended when you call them gay. They made us stop saying it at work because they hired a homosexual. So now we're just politically correct, "Man, that is homosexual." The gay guy actually found it to be pretty amusing... XD

I don't think they should be offended by it, because Cinderella... it's not straight... it's homosexual.

Hahah has anyone noticed that at the bottom of this thread there are ads that say "Meet Hot Gay Men" and "Lesbian Film on DVD"? Sorry if this was mentioned elsewhere in the thread.

No, I don't use that word...

Gay is a word and if I'm not allowed to say it, I might as well live in Russia.

Gay has only one original meaning. Gay means happy. Then people changed it and now it means homosexual. If people can just alter the english language and change the word gay from happy to homosexual, then there is nothing wrong with someone using the word gay to describe something stupid or dumb.

I use it and I know I shouldn't, like sometimes I would say 'OMG that was gay' then I would catch myself saying it and say something else.
