In my phone, yes because every number is considered long distance. On my house phone, I only do it to long distance numbers.

QUOTE(xxxSiERRAxxx @ Feb 24 2006, 2:57 PM) *
Oh I was just on an awesome cruise of the southern carribbean like 3 weeks ago. On the telephone of the cabin it said to call the country code, area code, and then the number. I asked my mom what America's country code was and she gave me a reply, "Its one. That's why we have to dial one before our area codes."

I have NO idea what the other country codes are.

We're probably number 1 because we might have thought to do country codes first, or maybe we were the first with telephones. Hell with that I really don't know but I have a feeling its my first guess.

Thanks Sierra, did you have fun on the cruise?

Dail 1 before the Area Code for long distance. :]

I believe a "1" signals the phone that there is about to be an area code and a "0" signals an international call.

Which is why there are no seven-digit numbers that begin with "1" or "0".
