scratch on DVD Options

I got one of my favorite DVD's scratched up and it won't play on my labtop or on my DVD player any more. Does anyone know how to "get rid of" the scratch. I know it's possible. I've read about it... on the internet. People say the toothpaste thing works... it didn't for me at least.

I can get it to the menu and then it just freezes...
