an old china doll stood upon the mantle,
her fine porclain face lighted by a candle .
She was quite a beauty, her features were fair,
yet her gentle green eyes, shimmered with despair,

she stood there, silent, observing life around her,
she felt the emotions that often surround her.
she watched a mother grow ill and die,
she watched a daughter grow wary and cry.

she never saw a father, he was never there .
she figured it was probably because he never cared.
all she heard of him, were his loud and booming yells,
making life for the mother and daughter pure hell.

she watched the mother struggle, just to make ends meet.
she saw how the mother never admitted defeat.
she heard the mother pray for everyone but herself,
and she watched the mother wither, upon her lonely shelf .

she watched the daughter learn all those hard lessons of life,
she watched the daughter hesitantly pick up the knife .
she watched the daughter cut her wrist, blood staining perfect skin,
she watched the daughter cry, her tears a haunting crimson.

there she stood upon the shelf, watching what went on .
she watched how they were always hurt, how the pain was never gone .
she saw their future-- dark and bleak ..
and one single tear rolled down her cheek .
