Table Help & 3 Questions, Table Colors Error and 3 more questions Options

I have a question, I have a layout but I want to change the colors of the tables a lot like www.myspace.com/joeybadass did on his, I've looked but most of them only change the actual text, creating a box around it, not the whole table in the frame. I also would like to know how to change the bg colors of the nav bar. For the tables I've been trying to change it by changing the color

<!-- begin code provided by createblog.com --><br />table, tr, td { background-color:PUTTINGHEXCODEHERE; border:white; border-width:12;}<br />body {<br /><!-- end code provided by createblog.com -->

I've used a code suggested by another user

<!-- begin code provided by createblog.com --><br /><span style="background-color:FFFFFF; background-image:url(''); background-position:center center; background-attachment:scroll; filter:alpha(opacity=75); -moz-opacity:0.75; opacity:0.75; padding:5px; width:100%; height:100%;">dfkdjfdf</span><br /><!-- end code provided by createblog.com -->

but like I said above it only puts a white box around the text not the table. I'd also like to know how to change the text such as "Books, Movies, Televison," etc. Please if anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
