^messenger bags are not man purses.
Man purses are actual purses but designated for men. Messenger bags are just that; messenger bags. They're the new briefcase. |

To expand, messenger bags were first used by NYC bicycle couries and are based on telephone linemen's bags of the 1950s. They were used because they can hold a lot of stuff and can easily be thrown over one shoulder, which means that they can be worn over the back, which is handy when you are riding a bicycle.
