HELP: DVD/ CD-RW drive fails to recognize blank, CD-Rs Options

system:

Toshiba Satellite 2405-S221
windows xp home, with SP2

combo optical drive:
Toshiba DVD/ROM sd-r2212

alright, my problems probably came with installing SP-2, but i didn't notice it till i tried to burn a CD-R.

Problem:

drive does not read Blank CD-Rs.

when there is no disk in the drive, it appears as "DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:)" with a generic CD drive icon in my computer.

when i put in a blank CD-R, the drive spins up an apparently recognizes that there is a CD-R in the drive, and the name changes to "CD drive (D:)" and the icon changes to one of a CD that says CD-R on it, so apparently it recognizes the disk.

when i double click it (or right click -> open, right click -> explore, or drag a file to it), the following error message pops up:

some facts about my problem:

-the blank CD-Rs work with other computers.
-burned CD-Rs work.
-audio CDs work.
-program CDs work.
-i can't get drag and drop CD to recognize it either.

the programs i have that might conflict:

- Drag'n Drop
- Exact audio copy
- windows media player
- real audio player
- winamp
- The godfather
- media tagger
- creative music organizer and player

Things i have found on other forums:

1. other people have problems with this, it's apparently the toshiba model that has the problem. the model i have and a very similar one are apparently the only ones to have this strange problem.

2. speculation that it's the motherboard drivers or something like that?

3. that no one has posted a solution.

Things i have tried:

1. tried to update DVD/ CD-RW driver. (result- no driver updates avalible to update to)

2. made sure that the drive was recognized in windows as able to write to CD-Rs (it was at the right setting)

3. uninstalled roxio CD creator or some other thing that i've never had, but is often offered as a solution.

so: help? anyone? please? i'm tired of not being able to burn CD-Rs

Since it's not a driver error, and it's a laptop, I'm guessing the drive conked out. How old is it, and did you take good care of it?

i think it's 4 or 5 years old...

i don't that it's the drive's broken, becuase i can read every CD but a blank CD-R (haven't tried RW).

the CD-R works in other comptuers.

i've taken pretty good care of it, didn't touch the lens, etc. now that i think of it, a little before the problem came out, i accidentally closed it on a mouse wire, and the faceplate came half off... but that's about the worst thing that's happened to it.

hmm. i may pull it out and try the drive from my sister's laptop...

if it conked out, why does it still read other CDs, tho?

I have the same problem with my other computer. Except I have an EMachine, I can't burn DVD's/CD's there either. It stopped working after I made a copy of an Anime Series.

I have the same exact problem. I have a Sony Vaio Laptop with the toshiba drive and everything.

It happened after i Reformated it though, not ugprading to SP2. What I used to do was after it stopped burning, I would make the files into ISO or NRG or any other type of Image file on Nero, Then I would reburn it onto a cd using Alcohol 120%, but lately that hasn't been working either.

have you tried factory or system resetting your comp? (i know it sounds desperate, well, it is...i guess) sp2 didnt have many more things than sp1 did, just more security and accessablility options, which you could get from zonealarm and adaware and firefox combined.

Checked for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer “NoCDBurning” set to 1. (Shouldn’t be there or should be set to 0.)



and it was set to 1, so i set it to zero and tada!
