Layout Tweaking Help, Navigation and entry layout problems. Options

here is the layout I'm working on.

The problems I am having are as follows:

1. Custom navigation isn't showing up properly.
2. I want to change how the journal entries are displayed.
Right now, it shows the userpic(on friends view only) then the date/time span, then the entry; all in one row.

I'd like that to be a column instead. so the picture would be above the time would be above the entry.

I'm fairly good with the css portion of it, but I'm lost on the lj overrides.
