I had to do a small writing exercise that really helped me appreciate the use of verb for descriptions. We tend to use (and overuse) adjectives when describing a scene, but verbs also make great descriptions when used correctly. If you want to, the exercise is to write a 300 word paragraph describing something without any adjectives. Here's mine:

5 on the 5

The clock says 5:00. My eyelids drip down, replacing the numbers with darkness and coating a layer of moisture over my eyes. Outside the window, the sun glares on the pavement, scorching all that is not protected by shadows. Its radiance causes water vapors to rise and sway, mesmerizing any gaze that falls on them. The engine drones on, playing its tune of weariness; it is accompanied by a hundred others. A symphony of cars is thrumming, sending out waves of fatigue. My chest rises as I inhale a waft of air that comes with the smell of exhaust and asphalt. The knowledge of the harm is overpowered by tiredness. From my forehead a bead of sweat creeps down. It lurches down the contour of my nose and hangs on for its life at the tip. I then realize that there are a number of other beads waiting for their chance at the journey. With no warning, a yawn forces my mouth open and fills my eyes with tears. My arm wipes away the haze and I blink a few times as the focus comes back. The clock says 5:01.

It's just a minute of my hour long commute..hehe.
