QUOTE(itsARIE @ Oct 17 2007, 10:14 AM) *
Lev. 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"

isn't Leviticus a holiness code? wasn't the part of leviticus that ur quoting from a holiness code written for priests?

QUOTE(Steven @ Oct 17 2007, 11:06 AM) *
Really now, did the bible use the term homosexual when it was written? These are translations into english based on how the translator interprets them. Original manuscript please.

that's what i was going to say. i'm pretty sure the original word is the greek word arsenokoitai. the word homosexual doesn't exist in either greek or hebrew, so there isn't a literal translation. so i don't think the bible says anything about homosexuals, the people who interpreted say something about it

it's my opinion that an interpreted translation is worthless
shrugs

that is just what the KJV says...
IMO, if the bible says it (even in the KJV) then its the truth, no matter what.

just my opinion.

so u don't care at all if it's being accurate or not?

i duno, it's whatever, i'm glad ur so trusting
i just don't think it's all that great of a debate when ur quoting interpretations. then it seems like they are being used out of context if Leviticus is a holiness code for priests.

i've honestly never heard anything about this.
i'm not saying it's not true.

i've been raised in church all of my life and that's never been brought to my attention.

it's just what i've always heard

but even if it isn't a holiness code for priests only
how come u pick and choose what u follow from leviticus?
how about in 20:9 where it says anyone who curses his father or mother should be put to death. have u ever cursed at ur parents?

i don't get why some things apply and some things don't

actually i have never ever curse at them or in front of them.

my dad is a youth pastor... hardcore.
and my mom is a strong, faithful christian.

EDIT...

i don't pick and choose.
i'm not saying i'm perfect and i follow all the laws.
because by no means do i do..
however, i do know the bible fairly well.

i don't tell ppl... you are sinning.. you are going to hell..
i don't tell people that i think that they should be straight because that is what the bible says..

i was just bring those verses into this debate.

i thought it was valid.

isn't it like 19:27 or close to there that says u shouldn't cut ur hair?

still, i don't get why some apply and some don't. it just seems whatever happens to fit the argument is the one that applies.

I'm not trying to prove anything though. I know the Bible says nothing specifically about homosexuality being bad. You just can't prove your side of the debate so you're telling me to go do it.

well it depends on if you believe in the KJV of the bible or not.

if you don't, then that's your opinion.

however, the KJV does talk about it... as I showed earlier.

he didn't ask for the gist of them

well being that they are written in Hebrew I don't see how I could give any direct quotations...

you can read about them here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_sea_scrolls

or google them.

---------

Just because some of you don't believe in Christianity doesn't mean that you can go and make fun of it the way some of you are doing. A lot of people see the Bible as a holy book, show a little respect. You can still argue without saying all of that extra stuff that people can find offensive.

no she isn't, but you are.. the bible is one of the most accurately preserved books in history. ever heard of the dead sea scrolls. Probably not because your to busy being mean to people and calling them idiots before even researching about the dam topic.

i have read it, and i still don't get the point. jeremy said that the bible was changed to meet people's liking and that was ur reply. what do the dead scrolls matter to that? we've already been over how the bible/dead sea scrolls/ect don't translate literally into english, and therefore many words are left simply up to interpretation.

I was proving that the bible is one of the most accurately preserved books in history.. which makes it very unlikely that is has been altered in such a way that Jeremy stated.

I thought you said you knew what the dead sea scrolls were. The earliest copies of some of the books from the old testament. When translated they came out to be very similar to our modern bible today.

She's a blind idiot who wont even try to think that maybe her beliefs are wrong. That's why it's so much better not to have any. Well, thats not true. I believe in a modern code of law, I believe in ethics, I believe in a civilized society of educated free-thinkers. This does not mean I want hippies to rule the world, far from it. I fucking hate hippies, they all claim to be openminded yet they are all one-thought losers who hate the government just because they are trying to create a civilized society. You're all a bunch of complainers and lazy fuckheads.
My point is that I believe in some things, but religion I refuse to believe in. I just find the whole idea stupid, my rational mind will not allow an impression. The lengths that people go to just to get their religious points across is ridiculous.
Love for your fellow man, honor your father and mother, do not lie, cheat, steal, commit adultry, yeah these are the main points of the bible, there to teach us how to be good in the most simple use of the word. The main points, yet all you ever hear about is the condemnation of gays and abortion, sub-topics barely talked about in the Bible. No one seems to care about good will towards all men, not when there are eggs to be thrown at young women who have made a mistake in life and have found a way to fix it, not when there are gays trying to have the rights that all people are promised in this country. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I guess 1 out of 3 will have to do for them, to hell if they don't like it. The religious right are still holding onto the outdated notion that marriage is a sacred vow between a man and woman only and must not be changed, yet when 40-50% of all marriages in America end in divorce, who cares anymore. And don't let them adopt children, they'll just turn them gay. Id rather have a gay scholar contributing to society than a straight gangmember robbing me on my way home.

Get your goddamn priorities straight.

Wait wait, which Jesus are we talking about? Jesus of Nazareth? Jesus of Suburbia? Jesus of Colbert?

Larry King: Are you running for, you know... the big one? *points up*
Colbert: God?
