True or false: The sentencing of juveniles to life without parole constitutes “cruel and unusual punishment.”

^stop being a douchebag and spamming this attempt at a real topic, take that shit to one of the numerous other pointless topics we have on here.
i'm gonna go with in most cases, true. juveniles are more likely than anyone to be able to be rehabilitated and set on the right track. |

Well, the reason i said false is because of a situation that happened with a friend of mines friend who was murdered over the summer.
I guess in most cases though i would say true however i was just thinking of Justin, the kid who was brutally murdered. And i guess when you see a teen kill another kid their age, what makes them think they wont do it again? So i guess if i could edit my post i would be half and half. It would depend on the situation for me. |

Not everyone can be rehabilitated, and in my opinion, for a child to be rehabilitated it's going to take more than just access to good counseling. If a child is living in an environment where crime is the norm and his or her parents aren't involved parents or positive role models it's going to make it more difficult for that child to get rehabilitated. A lot of people where I live are in favor of juvenile rehabilitation because it focuses more on accountability than punishment. If you're a young, impressionable kid who ends up in adult jail for a nonviolent crime you're going to be able to learn from hardened criminals.
I would assume that getting statistics about how well rehabilitation works would a little difficult, but here's a snippet: "Research has shown that kids processed through the juvenile court are safer once released to the community than kids processed through the adult court. In Wisconsin, only 13.8% of kids returned to the community after being in a juvenile correctional placement commit a new crime that results in incarceration within two years. For girls, that percentage drops to around 8%. That means that 92% of the girls and about 86% of the boys released from juvenile corrections will not have a new offense within 2 years which results in a new incarceration." then again, who wants to pay for it? |

Life in prison is stupid, grind them up and stuff them in sausage cases to be packaged in those instant breakfast boxes.

First, what is a juvenile, and secondly, no. If teenagers insist they are right all the time, let them take responsibility for their actions. when did the teenager insist they were right? no one is saying they shouldn't take responsibility for their action, because nobody is saying we should let them free with no consequence. they're saying that being sentenced to your entire life without parole in prison for something you did as a very young person (something that doesn't even have to have harmed or killed anyone) isn't a punishment that fits the crime. |

Teenagers always insist they are right. Do you feel kidnapping deserves a life punishment without parole? |

Teenagers always insist they are right. Do you feel kidnapping deserves a life punishment without parole? no they don't. i know plenty of teenagers and have been a teenager myself. you have never once as a teenager not insisted you're right? no group of people always does anything so that's a pointless thing to bring into the argument. no i don't, because kidnapping is too broad of a term, so without knowing the specific event i wouldn't be able to say what would be just or unjust punishment. if someone takes someone else, carts them off, holds them in their backyard for 15 years while they rape them...then yeah sure. if someone has a dispute with their divorced spouse (gf/bf perhaps since we're talking about teenagers) over whether the child is going to stay with them or not, then goes and takes the child and runs off for a period of time and the man/woman reports a kidnapping...then no. i don't really think that person necessarily deserves an entire life in prison without parole. but regardless of what i believed about kidnapping and it's punishment, that wouldn't change anything because kidnapping isn't the solitary reason a juvenille could be sentenced to live in prison without parole. it depends on the situations. some crimes probably warrant a harsh sentence without parole even for a teenager, but a lot of them i don't think do. |
