Does anyone know any Asian Superstitions? (Sorry)

It has to be asian because I have to do an interview, but I'm chinese...And the whole project idea is how did Halloween change over the years? But yeah, Iono any grandparents living in my neighborhood except for my own, but they didn't have Halloween..So superstitions are my next choice..

For Example: After people pass away, we have to burn money or something to pay respects...and then something about spirits and ghost ...*shrugs*

Does anyone know any?

Uhhhmm I know a myth. Where like if you don't eat ALL the rice in your bowl (yes even the little specks of leftover rice) then you'll get pimples. The bowl would be your head, and the leftover rice are the little pimples on your face.

eh, there's this thing where you're not supposed to stick something straight up in your food. like, don't stick a spoon or fork or chopstick straight up in your food.

i'm not sure if these superstitions are "asian superstitions" but i grew up w/ my parents telling me things i shouldn't do.

- don't whistle at night
- don't point at cemetaries or graveyards...
- its bad luck if you stick ur chopstick/fork upright in ur food. (does that make sense? =P)
- umm...my sisters and i can't take picture with just us three, or for that matter we dont take picture of just three members of my family. something like say my sisters took a picture with just us three..well something bad will happen to the one in the middle. so you'll never see a picture of just me and my two sisters..

that's about all i cant think of right now.. =P

i was gnna tell you that you shud take the tooth that has fallen off and thrown it over the roof of yur house if it`s growing upwards..and vice versa

buh since it has to be halloween..

you have to burn incenses or money..to send them off before the ghost door is closed..so they can go shopping..

uh i dont if this applies to everyone, but i'm half chinese and when someone dies your only allowed to wear white on your head during that day of the funeral otherwise the person who died wont like you in the afterlife (??) i dunno.

i'm also half viet (catholic) so i'm not allowed to be superstitious. at my church though, when someone dies we wear a white patch (clip on) on our shirts for 100 days and we pray every night for 100 days so that the person who died would be happy in heaven.

yeah kinda weird

Erm, I know that they believe like for every grain of rice you throw away or waste, is every maggot you'll have to eat when you die.

Ohh... well in that case. I know a couple of Chinese death/creepy/supernatural superstitions.

In the Lunar Year 7th month 14th day, it's the day when the ghosts come out from the underworld and roam earth. You could probably find some more information about this on the web, since it's a pretty well-known date. People burn offerings to their ancestors so they don't bother/"haunt" them on that day.

And pink_tootsie, that's called Feng Shui. _dry.gif

And there are some reincarnation superstitions too. Ugh. It's too bad these Chinese superstitions have way too much to do with dates and times and specific numbers. I can't remember how long it takes for someone to cross the bridge to reincarnate. Or like how many days you're supposed to mourn, and how to mourn for a deceased loved one.

Uhmmm at my house (im filipino) its said that you should always have spagetthi(sp) or a dish with noddles in it, during someones birthday... This is so because the length of the noodle represents life, and if you hve "long noodles" its said that you will live for a long time.

Thanks barelyy_coherent. You helped me out the most. I'm agnostic/atheist and all, so I don't really have a religion...Basically, I have no knowledge in this burning money bringing them food thing, so thanks a whole bunch!

dayam i know soo many...

dont place your bead infront of a door cos at night the devil will drag you out of bed...

dont have a mirror at the end of your bed cos it doubles your bad luck...

dont clean you house for a week after chinese new year(ull clean away your good luck)...

never have your front door level with the road cos all the bad luck will come to your house...

never have a straight running flow from the front door to the back door cos your good luck will run out of your house

never go to sleep with your hair wet ull get headaches when you are older...

never have a purple door... youll invite ghosts into your house...

i follow all these... there are more but i cant think of any yet...
