I was torn between putting this here or in Fashion, but I think the question I'm going to ask at the end makes it more suitable for a lounge discussion.

So, I was reading through my Huffington Post RSS feed, and I found this Washington Post article. Obama's about to add more items to his official campaign gear and has tapped famous designers to help him out:

QUOTE
The mix, available online next month, ranges from T-shirts to tote bags and will lend a bit of runway panache to the Obama brand. The list of participating designers, which includes Derek Lam, Isaac Mizrahi, Tracy Reese, Charles Nolan and Diane von Furstenberg, covers the full spectrum of the market, from high-end to inexpensive. Other names have been bandied about but not confirmed: Beyoncé, Russell Simmons, Michael Bastian, Vera Wang.

And if you know anything about these designers, you know that their stuff is pricey. According to the article, the t-shirt designed by Tracy Reese might be priced at $80. So, my question is how effective do you think this will be? Do you think it'll help him gain votes or help McCain to prove his "point" that Obama is an elitist? Will you get any of this designer Obama wear? (I want the Derek Lam or DVF tote bag myself.)

The people who would be swayed by commodities like that are already going to vote for him anyways, so no, it won't help win votes. He won't look elitist, but it'll fuel the celebrity charge against him.

I'm not quite sure when being an elitist became a bad thing, though. I want the Leader of the Free World to be the most elite of the elite. He should be so superior to everyone that he can dissect whales with his thighs.

^ True. It does have an effect.

Campaigning sure has changed. Facebook, Myspace, et al. and now promotional fashion? I'm okay with just buttons.

joel: you know what the worst part is?
