A county in southwestern China has killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government campaign ordered after three people died from rabies, official media reported Tuesday.

The five-day massacre in Yunnan province's Mouding county spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing local media.

Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot, the newspaper said. Other killing teams entered villages at night, creating noise to get dogs barking, then honing in and beating them to death.

I read about this yesterday.
I think they kind of had good intentions because they wanted to protect their people from rabies but they definitely went about it the wrong way.

One of my co-workers was being a racist ass about this. Ugh, like I have any control over what people from China do just because I'm Chinese.

I remember when the HK government killed all the chickens when the bird flu was around.

We're using chicken flu methods to kill off rabies, now? Ridiculous.

It's Mainland China we're talking about over here, where people die from fake baby formula, fake purple yams and fake sanitary napkins (okay, I'm not sure about people dying from the last one. But still, that's pretty nasty). Do you think they'd worry themselves over some dogs?

oh come on, would u rather have them try and take a hella long time trying to round up dogs in a orderly fashion, and get yelled at cause people started dying from rabies and they didnt work quick enough? its the most efficient method. brutal yes, but its the quickest way to contain the disease

^ True, it is a quick, convenient way to contain a disease, but I can only see it justified as a last resort.
Chicken flu, aka H5N1, global epidemic? I can see that as justified. But rabies? A simple vaccination will prevent any symptoms from developing.

Even if this was a last resort, it could've been much more humane.

I believe this is a sort of triage, or containment. A simple vaccine can prevent symptoms from manifesting, sure. However, I do not think this simple vaccine is widely avalbile in China. It is the same strategy used in wildfires. Simple and effective, yet costing nothing.

^ Wildfires consist of things made of fibre. Rabies consist of living animals.

You can't compare the two.

Awwwwwww. cry.gif

I saw that on the AOL welcome screen yesterday... and regretted looking.

You'd think they'd find a more humane way of killing them. Instead of finding them and beating them, maybe giving them a shot to put them to sleep.

The way a wildfire and a virus spread is comparable. In both cases, removal of the fuel is the only effective way to halt a massive spread. In humans, this is done by vaccination. Because of the probable lack of vaccine, destruction of the animals was the only viable way to remove the fuel.

There's a whole a lot of better idea than to slaughter these massive dogs.

They dont know which dogs had rabies. it doesnt give them the right to kill 'em off.

.... do people know how does dogs looks like .. w/ rabies?

o__o

Hmm, let me think about that for a second.

Nope. Still not comparable.

Both spreads can be modeled mathamatically by the avalible fuel and the rate of transmission, by similar forumlas.

The growth can be halted either by reducing transmissions or by reducing fuel.

When a house fire is fought, transmissions are reduced. In a hospital in a developed country, transmissions are reduced.

However, in a wildfire and an epidemic in a developing country, the fuel is the only thing that can be reduced.

They are comparable by mathmatical standards. They are dealt with in the same manners.
