How does one usually start a narrative essay? I've never had to write one before.

I would usually start off with an icebreaker.

Narrative essay, as in "when I was little..."? (Sorry, I forget, haven't had to write one for a few years now.) If so, start with something poignant. A straightforward but interesting thought, a mysterious event (a foreshadowing kind of event), someone's shocking sentence, etc. Generally, something that draws the reader in and doesn't make you sound like your grandparents (WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE...).
If not, then idk, sowwy. :x |

You could provide a fact or a personal story to catch the audience's attention.
From there on, just make it natural. |

Do you already know what your narrative is going to be about
(for me the storyline helps me to think of a narrative opening) |
