I need help from all you Bay kids to drop some knowledge on your region. Since I grew up on the east coast and now live in the south, I'm accustomed to hearing rap/hiphop from both areas. But the problem is, I like West coast hiphop, I just don't know much about it past its uprising in the early 90s.

School me.

So I just watched the movie Collateral, it was really dope. The ending was sort of wack however, very anti-climatic but still sort of sad. It was one of those movies where you sit there and just watch the credits like damn, it's over? Same with the movie "Gallipoli". Was it a good thing that they made a likable and thought provoking villian in Vincent (Tom Cruise)? I'm not sure. Jamie Foxx was dope as usual, but Tom Cruise definately outshined him. But this was definately one of the top thrillers of 2004, it is a shame the movie was not more recognized.

Bay Area rap music is sort of wack. Sort of. I'm not a HUGE fan, but some of it is alright. My favorite artists include Frontline, Balance, Zion I, and Mistah FAB. It's not really "lyrical", similar to Houston in that it gets a bit repetitive. It's a Kobe Bryant commercial thing, and I mean it's love or hate. I'm not really the most knowledgable or the biggest fan, Bella could probably tell you more. However, I do think that the bay area has really fallen off since 5 to 10 years ago.

Collateral > Bay Area Rap

peace.

Current Bay Area hip-hop is defined by the hyphy movement.

Hyphy is really hard to explain. It's a mixture of a lot of things. It's mostly like a Bay Area culture, it's always evolving so it never becomes boring and stagnant. E-40 helped birth the hyphy movement describes it as a dance, a culture that is constantly being added to.

The main aspect of hyphy is having fun. It's about having a good time. Goin' stupid, and goin' dumb are both relative to having a ball (usually with the help of some drugs or alcohol, but hey, whatever works). Going stupid is basically a crazy dance (which ive perfected over the years) that has you just...going...stupid? Crazy, dumb, retarded. There's no other way to explain it. I think you downloaded the Tell me When to Go music video, all the people in the big ass house. They're going stupid.

Speaking of Tell me When to Go, that song basically epitomizes the Hyphy movement in the bay. I'll explain the part at the end where he tells you about the hyphy movement.

Thizz Face - Lookin' like you smelt somthin you dint wanna be smellin! The expression one gets when using the drug Exstacy. Yeah, I spelt it wrong. Mac Dre explained it and the Thizzle Dance in a song.

Thizzle Dance -
''First, I do like this, put a look on my face like I smelt some piss,
bounce to the beat til it starts to hurt,
then i dust all the smurf off me shirt,
dip to the ground as I catch the bass,
then I wipe all the sweat off me face
hop back up then i start to slide,
popping my collar as i glide,
then i break the thing down, do the bird,
dust myself off like i jus stole third,
come on everybody, nows your chance
f**k the harlem shake its the thizzle dance!

Ghost-Riding-
When the car is moving, but your not driving it. You could either be outside the car or hanging out the door/sunroof/window, it really don't matter. In the song, E-40 says ''Ghostride the whip'' Your whip is your ride.

I'm sure you know what stunna shades are.

More Bay Area slang
Grapes- Purple. A strong form of the drug marijuana. Grapes = love. You prolly already knew that one though.

and damn I really can't think of anymore right now so I'll get back to you on this one.

Bay Area Artists
Mistah FAB- Is probably the most or one of the most lyrically gifted Bay Area rappers at the moment. Is an excellent freestyler. Other than Keak and E-40, is definatly the artist that is making the most noise. Will probably get signed to a major label later on.

Ya Boy- Wowed people with his debut album, Rookie of the Year. This guy comes hard on every single track. If you haven't heard any of his shit, PM me and I'll be happy to send you some. This boy is good.

Yukmouth- One of the King's of the Bay. This guy ranks in the top 5 when it comes to influence in the Bay Area, and along the West Coast in general. Well-known because of his beef with G-unit.

Frontline- Very good at making party music. Not too good at anything else, although the song ''Blackjack'' was very good. Hit song: 'Bang It'

Keak da Sneak- It takes you a good few monthes before you can understand a word this guy says. Nevertheless, he's one of the premier Bay Area artists, and is featured in E-40's hit, Tell me When to Go.

Mac Dre Deceased. But is one of the most played, and respected individuals in the Bay. Hell, people just put ''Mac Dre presents'' on their album covers and it sells.

More later.

Well, he covered a little bit of the hyphy movement and a few of the mainstream bayslappers.

( Which is what we call our music. Slaps. Bayslaps. Cos the beat slaps, yadadadameaaan ? )

The term Yadadamean has been changed and alternated and now you'd most likely hear Yadadadig my nig or yadadabooboo or Yadadadadigmajig etc. etc. It basically means You know what i mean. You know what im saying tho.

Bayslang, might need a whoooole `nother forum so I'll get to that later, but I will attempt to explain "Giggin"
Giggin is our dance. Usually used in the same sentence as thizzin, which is when you're on E. Or as Shahin said, the look on your face when you smell some piss. Giggin and thizzin go hand in hand but a lot of times, giggin is just the essence of all baydancing. Gettin stupid dumb and hyphy. Doin` the dummy retarded and ridin the yellow bus. I cant explain it. But Ill update later with videos of my friends giggin.

One good underground Bayrapper is Andre Nickatina. He's a slapper.
Turf Talk - Most known for "Supa sick wid it" and "Turf talk is Back" ft. E-40. Hes got good giggin` beats. But it dont slap too hard.
The Jacka- Not well known, but hes okay. Not great IMO.
Messy Marv - He was big for a while, mostly for Get on my hype and Thats W'sup.
Celly Cell - Not that popular. His bayslaps are lightweight aight tho.

Mac Dre - What can I say. He's a bay classic.

Some songs that were huge were
Keak Da Sneak - Super hyphy
Mac Dre - Thizzle Dance
Mac Dre- Feelin` myself
Mac Dre - S.T.U.P.I.D
E-40 - Tell me wenna go
Federation - Go Dumb
Keak da Sneak ft' Turf talk - Scrapin
Turf Talk - Supa sick wid it
Turf talk ft. Keak da Sneak - Turf talk is back
The Federation - Hyphy
Hoodstarz - Grown Man on

I'll update later with some bayslang.

Feeling kinda lazy so I'll just put up some more songs from the bay.

Keak da Sneak
Town Business - One of my favorites. Great beat, good lyrics.

Super Hyphy - Your gonna have to replay this one a few times before you know what the hell is happening

White T-shirt, Blue jeans, and nikes - Made those clothes stylish in the Bay, and much of the west coast for that matter.

Raw- Hella funny.

High Speed Specialist - Great song for when your speeding....with a jacked car. Or yours, yeah or yours.

Frontline - I'm notta big fan but hey.
Bang It- Good party song. Catch the Feelin' Myself remix too.
Blackjack- It's a meaningful song, one of their better.

Mistah FAB This guy is literally making music with EVERYONE in the Bay
New Oakland - Great beat, great lyrics. Great song.
Go Damn Dumb - It's new. I don't like it much.
Stupid Dumb and Hyphy - Okay, so it isn't neccesarily HIS song, but he's in it.
Throw it Up - Sick..
That's all for Fabby for now.

Yukmouth This guy hates everyone
War Time - Produced with The Regime. It's a 50 Cent diss, and they come hard. It's great.
Game Ova- G-Unit diss. Aimed primarily at the Game. But yeah, it's old but very funny.
U Love 2 Hate- Good song.
On The Run - Hey...I like it.

More later

Zion-I, and Frontline are two of my faves too. I do disagree you saying that Bay Area music has fallen off though. In my opinion Bay music is in its prime right now, because everyone is trying to learn more about it. I mean "Tell Me When To Go" is actually on MTV and BET now which is so big.

I am a Bay Area native, so I think I know a little something, sometthing. But what we do out in the Bay is somewhat hard to explain. You have to come out here and experience it for yourself to really know. I really like what Shahin posted because I could not have said it better myself. Brandon did you have anything specific you wanted to know?

*Sigh* How are they...not...nevermind

I haven't posted much of E-40's work because he is probably the most well known Bay Area artist at the moment. Of course, he's probably the only one you've heard of.

I disagree. I think most lyrics are coo'. And if they are only listenin' to Hyphy then they should broaden their horizons to the rest of the Bayslaps. Hyphy is dumbass old tho. Check U C IT or 18 Dummy.

Some bayslaps are slumpers tho'. They got stupid lyrics and beats that dont even slap. But not all (:
