Which University? Options

Ok so I have been accepted into every university, but I have absolutly no idea where to go. I want to be in Philadelphia, I love the city everything about it. I am Looking to enter law school so i want a program that can prepare me for that. I also really want to go to a catholic affiliated university.

My dream school has always been Penn and regardless I will most likely go there for grad school... the is purely for under grad.

Here are my choices:

St. Joseph's University
Pros: Nice campus, small student body, good repuataion, catholic, jesuit
Cons: Older facilities, doesn't have a great pre-law program, not very social

La Salle University
Pros: Nice campus, good pre- law program, full academic/athletic scholarship, well respected, catholic, amazing parties, I love the atmosphere and student body as of now my #2 choice
Cons: Bad area of Philly, not as hard to get into as Nova and Penn.

Villanova University:
Pros: Awesome reputation, good athletics, beautiful campus, excellent pre-law program, catholic, averagely social
Cons: too far from the city and too close to home (main line), extremely expensive, the majority of the student body is snobby,

The University of Pennsylvania:
Pros: Ivy League, extremely social, excellent academics and athletics, globally recognized, amazing campus, center city, amazing parties, 6th best school in the country, dream school
Cons: Little to no money coming my way, huge student body, not catholic affiliated, heavy course load

No offense but this is something that you should decide yourself rather than asking on forums to which university you want to go to. I mean when i was looking around and didnt know which to go to, i did the research myself and decided myself which university i wanted to go to.

he didn't ask someone on a forum to choose for him. he asked for advice and opinions, probably because he thinks that someone here who has already gone through this might have some advice. maybe even someone here has considered one of this schools or gone there and could give more input. you never wanted advice or opinions from people who had already gone through the process of choosing?

if you read the first post you can clearly see that he's done research on his own about these schools, hence him having pros and cons.



my only advice is that i wouldn't put TOO much into pre-law preparation. i mean you should for sure keep in mind what kind of programs the school has for that, but i wouldn't put all my stock in just that. i only say that though because i chose a school and then ended up changing my major. so it's nice to have something you like in general and that way if one factor does change you don't feel like you're only there for a reason that's no longer a big incentive for you. but that being said i also wouldn't choose a school with a bad program either. that's what makes all this hard though is it's such a give and take kinda situation.

(i personally think you should always take your dream school if it's a viable option.)

Just saying. If he wants reviews or opinions then he should visit the schools himself, ask students there how they think of it, and just do the research overall on the universities.
I've gone through the process of looking at colleges, i went to the colleges and talked with the students and looked at the programs in order to help me decide where i wanted to go.
And yeah of course i want opinions but i'm just saying. I'm not exactly being wrong here JC.

Someone who comes around here might even go to one of those schools or had thought about one of those schools... so I think it's a valid place to ask for opinions. So Mike's kind of doing some of the same things you're saying he should be doing.

That and pre-law is stupid. Pre-law is useless. Pre-law is not pre-med for law school. Pre-law is not a major. You can major in ANYTHING and go to law school afterwards. The most you have to worry about for law school is keeping a decent GPA in school and doing well on the LSAT - take LSAT prep course for that. Once you're in law school the majority of what you've learned in your undergrad doesn't mean too much aside from being complimentary in a potential future career. For instance, a lot of people major in accounting at my school then go to law school and bam you have an accountant lawyer. They don't worry about a pre-law program whatsoever. So I don't really have much advice but just don't pick a school based on pre-law.

Yeah but also there could be a lot of people on here who are not familiar with the colleges at all. Like if i came here and asked "which of these three colleges should i go to" i guarantee that if you're not from Michigan then you wouldnt know, unless i said like Michigan or Michigan State.

doesn't that just reinforce that you make no sense? you just said it would only be relevant if you are talking about well known universities. well, for the most part mike is talking about well known universities.

Oh and I guess some more opinions not necessarily on the schools but on the pros/cons you listed:

I think you'll find a great social environment at any school you go to, so I wouldn't worry too much about the social scene. Some schools have reputations for being party schools, i.e. UT, others don't. I go to a "commuter school" of 38,000 people or so and while a lot of people don't live on campus, I've met plenty of people at this non party school who I can party with if I want and plenty who are just good friends.

Catholic School - No real comments on this matter. I'm completely non-religious so that wouldn't really attract me, at all.

Location - I LOVE being near downtown. I'm about 30 miles from home so I can go home if I want but I can also stay away at all times. It's convenient. I don't know if you're worried about your parents always paying you visits and harassing you, but if not I wouldn't worry about distance from home too terribly much (unless you're in jeopardy of being forced to commute, f*ck that).

Course Load - I guess academics are kind of sort of important in school. What do grades mean, anyway? I think a lot of people are somewhat in control of their course load so long as they play things smart and register for classes early enough. The times my friends and I from all schools have run into issues has been due to late registrations and being forced to take a few different classes in one semester that shouldn't be taken together.

Money - I know it's easy to say it but, how willing are you to get student loans or assistance with school and pay it back post graduation? Is that a major concern to you?

Funny how you got into all the schools that I didn't...jk.

Well, why don't we start by eliminating St. Joseph's from your list, since this school seems to lack as many pros as your other potential schools.

As for Lasalle, one thing to consider is just because it isn't as selective as Nova or UPenn doesn't necessarily mean they don't offer a great education, or determines how successful they'll be. Go online and research any notable alumni. (Actually, do that with the rest of your choices.)In regards to its dangerous environment, any school near a major city has the potential to have problems with crime; It's just another thing to consider (as a matter of fact, the area surrounding Penn is considered to be more dangerous than Temple, even.)

For Villanova, you obviously won't have to worry about getting a great education from there. We've both (I'm assuming) heard rave reviews about it. That being said, I've heard the student/faculty are UBER-RELIGIOUS. So much so that some kid I know transferred to Penn State Main because he felt uncomfortable. Considering you're a practicing Catholic, I don't know how much that will bother or please you. And oh yeah, it's definitely expensive, so apply for as many scholarships as possible. And obviously, you'll want student loans.

For Penn, I'm going to assume that you'll be able to handle the course load. I mean, you got into it, so you must've had a great work ethic in school. The recognition alone could help you obtain many job offers or opportunities, so that's a MAJOR pro. That being said, it would be very costly, and it's in a dangerous area (I mentioned that before.) So do the scholarship/student loan things I mentioned before.

wait, if you want to go to undergrad.. how do you know you already got into penn? the only way that'd be possible is if you got in last year and deferred your admission for a year. otherwise, you can only find out in december about ED, in which case you are bound to go there anyway..

But! Now that I went to community college and am now at the perrrfect UC for me, I'm going to give you the cheesiest advice EVER!

Just from what I read, it kinda' seems like you're a good nudge away from LaSalle, but mebbe that's just me. (:

Oh, and GOOD LUCK with your decision! I was in the same predicament, and after talking to a bajillion professors who have given advice to a bajillion students in the same predicament, I realized that just the fact that you're giving this decision so much thought [hopefully!] means that you have a decent awareness of yourself and your well-being. That fact usually means that whichever university you choose, you won't regret it.

i have a lot of awesome friends that went to villanova, maybe it breeds awesome people? i don't know try it out!
