Running is a sport, am I correct?

Okay, I have to run the mile every Thursday for P.E.. I always get really bad times (from 12:30 - 14:00). It's because whenever I'm running, my sides, shoulders, AND throat start to hurt. I'm always so far behind everyone else. Is there any way of preventing these aches? My friend runs the mile like it's nothing. Her sides never hurt or anything. She runs the whole way. I want to be able to do that so bad!

before you start running stretch and get a little drink. while you run breathe steadily and run at a steady pace.

^ Yea. And don't eat that much before you start running. I always had that problem because P.E. was after lunch

It all has to do with how good shape you are in. I am on my tennis team at my school and the first day we had to run 2 miles around all the courts. My side was hurting so bad I didn't even get halfway through the first mile. pinch.gif I'm always last too so you are not alone. Now we have about 3 practices a week and we run about a mile a day and I usually can keep up with everyone else. After a while it gets better. My side doesn't hurt anymore!

The better shape you are in, the less you will hurt. Just keep practicing! Take it slower. _smile.gif

And also, dont eat before you run. A little water will do the trick but not too much. And when you get done running, don't drink too much water either, because usually you can get sick to your stomach..

If it's not one of those then you probably are just out of shape

Yeah...probably out of shape.
Just drink a lot of water.
And eat bananas or anything with potassium in it because I heard it prevents side aches.

Running is a sport. but you can't expect to excel at it by just running the mile in PE! if you really wanna shorten ur time and run the mile like it's nothing and get around 6 minutes in a mile, then you need to work at it. Run everyday before and after school, stretch, drink plenty of water. Start off small, like 1/4 mile a day for a week, and then the next week 1/2 a mile..the week after a 3/4 of a mile and so on...until you can start running a couple of miles at one time without stopping. at first it seems hard, but it really isn't. it's actually kinda relaxing. mostly it's mind over matter and pusing urself to the limit. I know you can do it happy.gif

hey, im on my school's tennis team too! first day RIGHT AFTER SUMMEr we ran 4 miles. that was crazy..everyone was like walking almost. we run the mile every friday, and omgg we all got so much better at it (everyone under 8:30)
my sides also used to ache a lot, but that was probably from lack of running. the more you run, the better you get. but start out slow! _smile.gif
good luck!

Yeah, it's a sport.

You're not the always that does that. My sides start hurting...it's because I'm out of shape.

i think you should stretch. if you stretch really good, that might not happen. and do you run when it is cold? if you do, than your throat might be hurting because of the cold air. mine does when we run in cooler weather. pinch.gif

I had the same problems, sort of. My sides would hurt and sometimes I would get a dry throat. Don't breathe through your mouth. Breathe through you nose. Breathing through your nose would keep your sides from hurting and getting a sore throat. It helped me so I think it would help you. And pace yourself. At the beginning run slowly but not too slow and keep that pace throughout the mile. At the end, sprint. If your about to stop, keep in mind that you will make it. Sprint as fast as you can.
