im considered "upper class" because of my dad's income...but my parents don't treat me or my siblings like we're rich. i don't get everyhting i want. my parents don't drive mercedes or lexus. i dont wear super expensive clothing because I DONT WANT TO. My parents save their money for college education....and i used to be mad about this because my parents wouldnt give me a whole lot of spending money like at the mall...but now i understand it and respect htem for it.

QUOTE(OriskybusinessO @ Jan 26 2005, 4:58 PM)
In almost every school there are people that have more money than you, or another group. I am not trying to brag or anything, but I am not poor, but I cant buy 100 dollar jeans either. I shop at Hollister and people always accuse me of being 'rich' when I cant shop at the store that owns them, Abercrombie. I wish people would stop being so mean to people that have money. Its just that the people I have talked to say that you should spend your money in other ways than buying clothes, and houses and other things. What do you guys think about the 'money and clothes and popularity' differences in high schools today?
*

I buy seventy dollar pants. No one accuses me of being rich or anything. My pants are sooo big, though, you can smuggle Mexicans across the border.

the pants I buy are usually between 50-80 dollars. But, most people don't know that. And no one cares really what you wear. Well, where I live. And there are lots of people who are richer than me. I know that for sure. We own a house in a neighborhood that supposedly a 'bad rap'. But, nothing is really bad about it at all. There are more stoners in the upperclass than where I live.

So.. ehh.

haha, EXACTLY what i was thinking. if all of that is the case and you're not in debt.. you're definitely not poor. being well off isn't a bad thing though- if you still treat everyone with the same amount of respect you shouldn't be embarressed about it... your parents worked hard to live comfortably, be happy.

ditto i dont get everything i want; i work for it and buy it myself. if my parents bought me a car i doubt i would appreciate it as much as i did with my own money.

however my dad buys a $70,000 jaguar and my mom drives a ford explorer. it all depends on the people i guess. everyone here likes cars.

Heh.. I'm a poor Asian guy living in the middle of white bread town... and it sickens me to see all that cash flung around... and they all take it for granted... One chick I know got a brand new $37,000 MDX for X-mas even though she doesn't even have a PERMIT!!! I have a LICENSE and we can't afford a USED CAR.

Well, i am not rich but people think that I am because my parents spoil me and get me everything that I want. I get everything because I am the youngest, the only guy, and the only one who lives at home. so my parents have nothing to spend their money at me and i use it to go shopping like stores like abercrombie, AE, Hollister, and Banana Republic. I always have cash in my pocket but its not cause i am rich.

Well I know that, I don't argue.
Well yeah I envy them, but I don't argue
or talk bad about them. All I know that what
I think is that rich people gets what they want.
That they are so lucky to have a rich parents.
People who have like millions or billions dollars
is when I think that way. But if you had like
ten-thousands dollars, I wouldn't think that way.

my school is kind of strange.. it's very clique-polarized; there isn't really a central hierarchy. most people just stick with their own cliques and mind their own business. but yes, money/clothing does play somewhat of a factor in forming some of the more superficial-based cliques. other grouping is influenced heavily by interest, activities, geography, race, churches, family relations, classes, etc.

I guess my family is well off. We're not filthy rich but we do manage. I do wear Abercrombie clothes a lot but mainly because i work there and i get the discounts. I drive a brand new Lexus IS300..It was a grad gift from my mom. As long as I keep my 4.0 in college...I'll always be spoiled. :o)

people generalize too much, they automatically assume that if u wear clothes from abercrombie or juicy that ur so much better. at my skool ALL the ppl that dress "rich" are "popular", i guess its cuz people think that rich ppl r somehow better. not to brag, but i can afford a wardrobe from abercrombie, i just dont get the point in buying $40 shirts and $70 pants. i just shop mostly at american eagle, pacsun, and aeropostale, the clothes r cute and just as good as (in my opinion) clothes from BCBG or banana republic. obviously other ppl dont think so tho....

^absolutely. I mean, saying things like that doesn't make any situation better. And, in very many cases, that is completely false.

Want to debate me on it?

Where do rich kids get their money? Obviously, they don't produce much.

So they don't produce it, but they take it from the working class? How does that work in America?

They take it from the people who do work, i.e. produce things. A lot of production isn't in America, but in fact, in other countries as well.

The stuff they get has to come from somewhere. And it clearly isn't coming from themselves. Some form of exploitation occurs in all economic systems except for ones under conditions of perfect competition, which are few and far between.

... that means that everyone, including the working class leach off of the lower classes and the lower classes off of other classes. Even the working class must consume from others who work. "Stuff has to come from somewhere", right?

Without people spending money, how can goods be bought? Through the bartering system?
