I bet there's been 259208 topics about this already, but I'm too lazy to look through all billion and one threads.

Hot Topic customers - called posers, freaks, goths, punks, and Hot Topic Kids. So, what are they?

They're no different than the preps, emos, indies, gangsters, skaters, burnouts, brains, jocks, or anybody else. They shop at a store.

I absolutely hate how people call them posers. Posers are people who try to be something that they aren't. When the Hot Topic kids deem themselves goth without taking on the rituals, attitude, and style of gothic people, then they are posers.

In all reality, these 'posers' are a group of their own. Why don't they adopt a new name and drop the poser label? It would probably lessen all this controversy. It would also tell people more about their fashion sense, then saying 'poser.' Poser could be anything - you're trying to be a cowboy, trying to be an emo, trying to be a jock, trying to be a punk, trying to be a goth, trying to be Bob Saget (although, I don't know why anybody would try to be him). Poser is a very generalized and vague word. We need to tighten this up a bit.

I'm gonna tackle 2 more things in this post, actually. I'm on a roll.

1. Punk is not a fashion. Punk is a lifestyle (attitude, behavior, and way of thinking/belief system). To be a punk, you don't need to dress like one. To dress like one, you don't need to be one, but don't say you are one cos you've got plaid pants on. That does not work. That's when somebody is a poser.

2. Punk music. I bet there's countless threads about punk music, as well, but I don't really care. I want my views heard and I want them heard now, whether y'all like it or not.

Some say punk music isn't New Found Glory, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, and/or Green Day. Those people are wrong.

There's more than one part to the punk genre. There's pop/nu, hardcore, political, scream-o, street, thrash, and psychobilly and rockabilly can even be linked to punk.

Next time you bash on New Found Glory, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, and/or Green Day, make sure you do it well. Those bands are terrible...I mean...

Next time you bash on one of those pop punk bands and say that they're not punk, think twice. They are indeed punk. Also, if you're going to make fun of those bands and say they're not punk, you gotta back it up with some punk bands that you listen to, and Linkin Park does not count. Linkin Park isn't even remotely punk.

If you read this whole thing, thank you.

i agree with you, i hate it when people call others "poser", it's similar to the "wannabe" topic. people are just trying to fit in when they change their style/etc., what's wrong with it? calling them posers is pretty malicious

I read all that, and I totally agree with you. As for my opinion on the Hot Topic , it's just a store. a regular store. A bit dark and morbid style, but still just a store.

I completely agree with you. Myself, im no punk. Nor do i try to be one. My arm is covered in wristbands and rubber, and i am currently wearing 3 rings. But i still consider myself a rocker. I dress my own way and im proud of that.

*Pat on the back* biggrin.gif

Also, i go to hot topic for all my band merch and t-shirt needs. That store was sent from above.

I agree calling people "posers" is really dumb and people who shop at Hot Topic are just kids or older people who like the things in there it dosent really mater if your a punk, rocker, prep and so on...

My definition of a poser is someone who is trying to be someone they are not just to impress another person. I do not think that a person that listens to bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are posers. One reason is because I listen to them, and I am not trying to impress anyone. As long as you are being yourself, thats all that really counts...

I shop at Hot Topic, but I don't consider myself punk/goth/hardcore ANYTHING. I find the stuff they have in there to be interesting and I mix a lot of the items they have with my own wardrobe. I don't like the whole "group" identity. To each their own, I say. Everyone is individual. If they wanna call themselves punk and listen to rap music, who cares? Let them do what they do.

I DON'T BELIEVE IN POSERS. I just believe some people try too hard... happy.gif

BE YOURSELF!!! Life's better that way.

I shop at Hot Topic! It's the BEST STORE EVER!!! That's the ONLY store 4 me...it wuz made 4 people like me who are 2 lazy 2 go 2 the city (i live about 10 mins. from San Francisco) & look 4 a tee of my fav. band on Hait Street...though it is my fav. shopping are in SF throb.gif . I just go 2 Hot Topic & ask them if they have N E new tees of my fav. Acid/Classic/Punk Rock bands...they show me the way, & in 2 minutes, I have a new tee! The only thing that gets me a little ticked is when kids who don't even listen 2 certain musician sport their tees, and it's an insult 2 the real fans...but wutever, that's on them.

But I say no, if U shop at Hot Topic, ur not a poser. I'm like THE BIGGEST fan of The Doors U'll ever meet (I listen 2 them & talk about them ALL THE TIME, & I ALWAYZ but new memorabilia of them!), & I'm also probably one of THE BIGGEST Hot Topic Kid around...so yeah, point made tongue.gif !

Speaking of Hot Topic & The Doors...gotta go 2 the mall & buy that Jim Morrison blanket! I don't want 2...I HAVE @ blink.gif !!!...LoL...

^^ For some reason, that post made me want to believe people who shop there are posers.

But it's stupid, cause at my school, if you shop at hot topic, you're considered a GOTH.
So no one like, at our school shops there...

last time i checked, "punk" was just another way to hate somone because of how they dress. don't be a punk, don't be a prep, on't be emo, metal, thug, a poser, or anything. dress how you want because of the way it looks, not for the friends it will gain or lose you. it's like you're all being assigned uniforms to signify which army you fight for in te war of teenage bullshit.

"There's more than one part to the punk genre. There's pop/nu, hardcore, political, scream-o, street, thrash, and psychobilly and rockabilly can even be linked to punk"

those aren't subgenres of punk. those are kinds of music that sound like punk. for example:
the casualties=punk
good charlotte= pop punk

the only similarity between the casualties and GC is distortion guitar. the casualties are punk, GC is different from the casualties, therefore, gc is different than punk.

and, most importantly, hot Topic is a load of BS. 50 dollars for pleather boots that were made by starving third world children living off a dime an hour. they donated thousands of dollars to the bush campaign. it's kind of ironic: selling rebelion to aid the man. their clothes are poor in quality and high in price. if you want to support a band you like by buying a shirt, wait till you get to one of their shows. the money goes directly to the band and usually costs less than in hot topic.

I don't like how you said "Hot Topic kids"

I know a few people that wear clothes from Hot Topic and go to school and show them off to all their friends. At my school, people are going whacko with those stupid patches. They go around showing everyone all their FANTASTIC patches from the OH SO FABULOUS Hot Topic.

Gosh, I hear it's owned by GAP, Abercrombie, American Eagle, Old Navy...who the hell owns it? Soon, somebody's gonna tell people it's owned by Dairy Queen or something dumb like that.

wow... both of those things surprised me. i've never heard of either of those.

anyways, i think it depends on the poser thing. some of the kids who shop there actually like the stuff being sold, but some kids around here definitely just shop there to try to be cool.

Will all of you just shut up.
People do NOT go under labels.
We are ourselves and thats it.
We all have our own style and shop at diffrent places.
Why is everyone so bent on labling people and saying who and what they are?
Losers.

I agree. And old Green Day = punk. wink.gif Yellowcard, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte = not even remotely punk; just pop. _smile.gif

That's why Sarah and I wait until things find themselves to the clearance rack. _smile.gif I agree because I usually do that, but a lot of times, my favorite bands don't come here. *Cough the Used and the rest of the Taste of Chaos Tour cough* whistling.gif
