I have a picture right, and i would like it transparent but how would i make it transparent with out a program?

What i mean is that like, i have a picture and on my xanga i have a black background, my picture is white though like the background is white.. so i wanna make it transparent..

if you have photoshop you can paint bucket the white background bright green and map green to be transparent when you go "save for web"

he said without a program. i think there is one code that makes the sides of the image transparent, but not the whole thing.
