I'm not in guard; I'm a flutist in marching and concert band. But I think colorguard is awesome!

I didn't vote because...well, if 'no' supports the band, then I'd have to say that. But otherwise, guard is really cool.

Ours isn't too bad; it looks hard (coordination, at least), but the result always looks awesome.

I don't know, but I love what the colorguard does for the band. In our 'Middler' (it's actually a piece from 'Aerodynamics', but it's our second piece in our show), the guard does a fantastic routine...it compliments all the dynamics and entrances in the piece. I love it.

hehe, yeah...I'm a total band nerd. I live for the practices at 7am every morning, and the games on Thursdays, and the contests....

Tweeak, I love your siggy! "What's the football team doing on the marching field??"

We practice on a parking lot. It works well enough; it's the same size, and all. Our school has its own stadium nearby, so we have a few stadium practices. On game days, we practice on the football fields...we don't do that everyday just because it's easier to practice on concrete and get all the sets right. Our band has gotten straight ones for...I dunno how many years...so I guess it all works.

Kayla--it IS all about the band!! biggrin.gif

Tweeak, what instrument do you play?

i play clarinet. badly, but hey, its a nice way to spend my time. its more of an addiciton now, actually.

we practice on the baseball field. sometimes football, but typically we only get that tuesdays, because otherwise the football players are there. we have to- nothing but 1s for us EVER (i think...)

we have games friday nights, practice 6-8pm tues and thurs. school starts at 7:30, so we cant do mornings, which is perfectly fine with me

I live in Texas. What about you?

I'm a Sophomore. Next year, I'll be in senior high. Practices will be after school (4:30 to 6:30, but they nearly always go to 7, at least).

Our band (9-10) and senior high band (11-12) combines to play one piece during the half time show of the senior high game every year. Last year (when I was a freshie..my first time marching), that combined band was the biggest in all of Texas. 200 people in my school alone...200 or 250 in the senior high...a LOT of band nerds, lol

I've been in the lowest band for three years...7th, 8th, and 9th. But this year, I somehow made the highest band. Yeah, that came as a big shock to me...I cried. LoL....my non-band friends thought I was crazy.

I'm glad I made someone's day! I love meeting band nerds.

except that here, referring to as as "band nerds" is a crime. i live in "band geek" territory biggrin.gif

<---i live in georgia

im a sophmore too, but we have one high school for 9-12. 140 member band. wouldnt it be really hard to learn a whole show for one performance?

in middle school, we were at transition years, because we got a new BD, and a lot of people quit, so there was only one class, but in high school, i am still in the lowest class which sucks a lot. theyre soooooo bad. i get to play first chair first part, but id rather play 3rd elsewhere. my class is awful. its sad and lonely.

me too!

Most band people who don't live in Plano (city where I live) call themselves band geeks. I think that's more common than band nerd....but whatever, I'm too used to band nerd. =)

Ah, I know what you mean about the lowest class! In 7th grade, I was first chair for a while...we had three bands, and I was okay with it. 8th grade, though, we had to cut down to two bands. My BD promised me that if I did solo/ensemble, tried out for all-city and did well, blah blah, I'd get in the highest band. But, when I did that...he told me that I was good, but there was no room in the highest band. -__- I was first chair all year...it was the worst year I ever had in band. We got one decent piece, for about four days...and when our BD found out that more than half the band was upset because the piece was actually HARD...he threw that one away and pulled out something easy.
Gah. That really sucked.

Yeah, it gets sad and lonely...all of my friends were in a higher band. I was stuck with a bunch of people who were upset about notes that were above the staff. -__- But don't worry. Band is always fun during marching season, no matter what band you're in. ^.^

its just become a bit of a pet peeve, like color guard and their "spin, not twirl" :rolleyes"

thats the exact same thing here, except with 9th and 10th grades...well, kind of. we have 3 bands, and while i was ok last year, this year we had a surpluss of clarinets, and i kind of suck, so everyone else moved up and im stuck with a bunch of freshmen (not even the cool ones) and stupid people. at the beginning of the year, i wasnt used to first part, so there were notes id never needed to play before, and admittedly i couldnt play one of the first songs they gave us at all, but the rest were fairly easy, and ive improved a ton, and yet i still cant move up because they hate me and the numbers dont allow it.

yeah, marching season is good, so that i get to be with all my top band friends and not compail too much ;]

haha, well first i have to say that saying twirl is ok if you are talking about baton twirlers but other than that its just annoying.. =]P

man i wish our band was better cry.gif we have like 75 people, and the majority sucks!! there are only a couple actually talented people. it doesnt help that our band director sucks!!! omg. plus he's suspended right now because some girls reported him doing....stuff.... and he teaches choir, marching band, and swing band, he's the color guard "advisor" and the drum line "advisor". [our drum line is pretty good.] its so stupid that he does all of those things. ><

my school has like no respect for preforming arts too. almost everyone at my school thinks band and esp color guard are stupid. not just the students either. the asb even tried to take our practice rooms and color guard room away from us so they could have a student store. >< wth! grr. so we had to like renevate them ourselves. sigh. i hate my school... _dry.gif

haha true

were at 140, but well near 200 next season (dont know how that will happen but...ok) sucks about the BD. we also have an assistantant BD, though. together they teach all the band classes, and extra band things, but we have a guard and drum instructors too. theyre pretty good, so we do well

We recently got two new BDs (last year)...they're pretty good. Our head BD (we have three) actually went to our school. Yeah, our school is that old. She was drum major at our school and at our senior high. She played clarinet. So yeah, we have good BDs.

We have around 400 band people total (9-12), because there're 200 in my 9-10 school. Performing arts has a lot of respect...mainly because a lot of people know about it. In 6th grade, everyone has to take either choir, band, or orchestra. So anyone who wants to ditch performing arts takes choir (don't need to buy an instrument), and then they do whatever they want. In the end, everyone ends up with a taste, though.
But, yeah...there're all kinds of people in our band. We're a close group when we're together, but we have our own little groups, too. That helps the band gain a lot of respect--everyone knows at least one band person.

This has almost turned into a band topic, rather than a colorguard topic. Hee. rolleyes.gif

i think thats because there are only two people that are actually on color guard posting. others are in band, and the rest dont know wth we're talking about x]P

and yeh we have a assistant BD too, but he's really new...so we cant just rely on him. so until our BD comes back, or we get a new one, we're relying just on our DM ADM and Fl. but they really dont know what they're doing either. yay we're screwed!!

and we have a color guard and drumline coach. not really instructors. =\ oh well. they're doing a better job than our BD. ><

our BD has been here since the current seniors freshmen year, and the assistant since maybe the year after that? im not actually sure, something like that. theyre good, but better for concert season than marching. we still get straight superiors and the best competitions around (because here we have independant competitions, rather than that curcuit junk), but with the last BDs, they won more competitions. oh well, they were suppose to be really tough, and the current ones dont even like me, so i probably wouldnt stick around with kirkland.

in 6th grade we have the option of band orch or chorus, but not everyone takes them. we have a lot of poor minorities, so they cant afford it. plus, the middle school was pretty big, so theyd all be too huge.

at least marching season is over, isnt it, lost in the clouds?

a lot of people hate the guard instructor during guard practices, but she seems fine during marching practices. i think she also works with UGA's guard, so she didnt even have that much time for us this year, which would be why they sucked at the beginning of the season. they go better though, and won our class 2/3 times. our drum major won an entire competition, and the entire band won one as well!!

well color also drop flags//rifles = marching band using point.. i really don't care about the colorguard for the thudering herd (the band i'm in).. i think the only time you would colorguard if the band is small and sucks soo the colorguard can use eyecatching flags to draw less attention form the judge..

colorguard.. -== boooo! =]

i saw a 90some person band without a colorguard, and seriously, you need colorguards. they may seem useless at times, but thats only till you see bands without them.

of course, it probably didnt help that that particular band didnt march very well, but still

we dont have a dance team, so we have the guard instructor and someone who helps with rifles and sabers. theyre both women, and thus not gay.

the guy who did our clarinet sectionals at band camp was gay. and he was learning flags for drum corp.

we hvae a bunch of staff for skill, but then they leave after that week

were pretty under funded and staffed, but our band isnt as big as yours, so were ok. actually, its fine with me. i can only take so many authority figures hating me at the same time. the drum instructor was our student teacher for the first half of the semester, and we had a mutual hate of each other. he didnt think i could play, i didnt think he could teach and conduct, so that was a fun time rolleyes.gif. then he went to student teach at my sisters' elementary school, so sucks for him!!
