sometimes I say it because something is funny, however, I also tend to say it if there is nothing else left to say, besides, even if it's an unfunny joke, I think it's better for me to type "lol" than just say it's not funny and hurt the other person's feelings or type down nothing at all.

I saw "lol" a lot online when someone IM's me and I don't really want to talk to them. But if it's like one of my good friends and it's really funny I'll be like "HAHAHAHAHAHAHROFLMAOHAHA"

I usually say "LOL" when I have nothing better to say or am bored and I say "Lmao or ROFL" when I'm actually laughing or think something is funny.
