Today -
I found out I am sheltered.

My friend (in my Chinese class, just knew him this year) came to my house to practice for a skit, and he was really amazed at how big my house is. (I really hate it when friends say that, it makes me feel like I'm climbing on top of them, which sucks) Yea, we practiced our skit and then we got to the subject of where we live. We (there were four of us) talked about the topic for 3 hours. And the whole time I was totally shocked. My friend lives in a ghetto, like, a real one. Where there are drug dealers and prostitutes and frequent muggings/robberies and drivebys.

I mean, I knew this stuff goes on, but now I truely have a friend who personally knows about this stuff. I had my first lesson on true street smarts: never be outside after sundown, when taking the bus never make eye contact/sit close to the driver/get off at stops at a convenience store where cops hang around/mind your own business/after getting off run home, stay grouped. The whole time I was shocked because I'm a sheltered dumbass who lives in a district where the only thing close to crime is the infrequent fight and impromptu drag races.

I really respect him a lot now, probably more than anyone else. He's put up with this stuff all his life, and he loves his life. He even says it's not that bad, but in my eyes it looks like a horrible way to live. His friends smoke weed and E and stuff like that. And he's tempted to smoke a joint everytime they're in a circle, but he always hesitates till they take it away from him for taking too long. Man, I totally respect him like crazy for that.

He doesn't look like the type that lives in a ghetto, nothing at all. But hey, he's the kinda guy that breaks stereotypes. He goes to the best public high school in the city, gets good grades, deals with the shit in his neighborhood, and still 100% drug free. I'll never be anything better than him!

So this thread is dedicated to my super kewlest friend Thomas! flowers.gif
For giving me an epiphany today.

Ok, so this thread has not much to do with you guys, maybe some won't even get to this part (long post i know), but:

Do any of you know friends who live in ghettos/bad neighborhoods. How do they deal with it? If you're sheltered like me, were you shocked to find out what happens in their neighborhoods? Sorry about the long post. Its off my chest now.

actually, everyone at our school is extremely sheltered, or should i just say rich. at least half the kids here at our school, their parents own their own businesses/companies. so, i guess i'd have to say, i don't know anyone who lives in ghettoes or places like that. i hope i don't sound too much of a stuckup kid _unsure.gif

wow i think i'm a sheltered person =x after reading that, i jus realize lols. i've known friends living at ghetto places but i never thought of the drug dealing, prostitutes around there. i jus thought it was some quiet streets and easily getting robbed or something. ><

i suppose im pretty sheltered too. i dont think that its as bad as you described of my friend anywhere in the school district, but i definitely do live on the better off side of mine. (i know what you mean by the way, it annoys me when my friends call my house big too). whats the worst we get over here? toilet papering trees? drag racing nearby? really very little crime. and most of the neighborhood is white too. theres definitely diversity, my school is very diverse, but the side of my old elementary school side is primarily white, but the schools ive gone too have gotten more diverse as weve added in more schools that are mainly not white from the other side

I guess I could say I live in the ghetto...
I mean people do drugs in the alley behind my house,
I can hear them speaking in spanish at like 1 in the morning.
My dogs bark cuz they can smell the drugs.
Some guy that was drinking&& driving
crashed into my neighbor's car a few weeks ago, && sped off.
Someone got stabbed behind the Hollywood Video around the corner from my house last month.
There's grafitti on my neighbor's wall that mind you they
JUST FREAKIN ' PAINTED.
I would NEVER walk around my area after 6ish...
or after dark for that matter.
I'm too scared. cry.gif
Man I used to live in the BEST neighborhood,
&& we moved here to this shitty area?
ermm.gif
I don't know what my parents were thinking.

I know one person who does. But I don't really know much about it.
But I guess I live in a "sheltered" area. In my neighborhood we could leave the garage door open and nothing would get stolen. There are people who actually have jobs making our neighborhood nice looking. I'm not rich or anything either, it's just where my parents wanted us to live.

yeah, same with me, but that's only because my neighborhood is very close to hers. but i have to say that the other side of our school district isn't really that bad. maybe a couple more crimes than the white side ( not to be racist or anything), but not as bad as people think. ( i know because i used to live on that other side....)
anyway, i know i'm really sheltered and i'm not really surprised. i knew this a while ago....that's why i try not to take advantage of what i have in life. it makes me wonder though...like, what am i going to do if something bad like that happens in my life? i don't know how'd i deal with it >< and it also makes me a little mad, too. cause i see people that go to my school saying " omg my life sucks" when they have the best of things....okay, i'll just stop talking now.

riverfield, actually.

and to answer one of the intitial questions, i dont really have any friends from the ghetto-er areas, because they tend to be the ghettoer people who think im an idiotic white girl, so they either ignore me or laugh at me. oh well, it works

oh, just kidding. did you read my edit? well, i do have friends from the " ghetto" area...they're really not that bad after you earn their respect. well, you don't really have to " earn" it but i think you get what i mean.

I already know that I'm sheltered.. on account of where I live.
I don't really know what it's like to be in a highly populated area where you constantly see crime right in front of you.
A little crime just shocks the whole town.
I know that I'm sheltered, because we have no gangs or anything like that here. Lots of farmland here.. and friendly people.
I really like where I live, but it just shocks the hell out of me to see real ghetto-type places. It saddens me. I mean, if you live in a place where there are some "ghetto" areas, you don't think as much of it..

I don't know.
I'm sheltered.

I live in Fargo, North Dakota.. what do you expect..? mellow.gif

i dont know what you said, so i dont think i read it until post edit. and summerour kids are more "ghetto" than peachtree kids...i dont know, my brain makes assumptions and generalizations...i hold nothing against them though, of course. i have friends who went to summerour, but they live in houses too. not that theres anything wrong with not living in a house...

dammit, im going to stop talking before everyone thinks im a complete bigot, which im not

i'm sheltered too. where i live is one of the most espensive places to live in my town. my friend and i were talking and she was telling me all these things about where she lived and i couldn't believe it. she told me about how people sell weed and get in fights by her house and stuff. i didn't know that kind of stuff happened in out town. when i went over there her mom wouldn't let us go outside after dark. my ma won't let me hang out with her because of where she lives.

Middle class suburban kiddies, yeah most of us are sheltered.

And even if we know about these things, knowledge is nothing without experience. Or at least nothing in comparison to experience. Such as you and your friend there.
