And in response to that. As I stated previously:

Yeah, so just accept people are ignorant and let them continue their ignorant ways. Right. That sure makes for a better society.

That is the wrong attitude to have towards such a serious issue. Racism is not something to take lightly. Sure, its everywhere and it may not ever fully change for the better. But that doesn't mean that we should just accept it. If we continue to just ignore or not make a big deal out of it, how can we expect things to get better?

For example, if African Americans didn't take a stand and demand their rights, segregation may still be in effect today. There would also be even more racist attitudes towards black folks than there already is today. But because of folks like Martin Luther King Jr. who made an effort and spoke out against racism, things have improved immensely, and not just for them but for other minorities as well.

There is no real solution to racism. But we must not allow it or simply accept it. What we CAN do is to rid people of their ignorance and speak out against it. If someone makes a racist remark towards your race or any other, discuss it with them and correct their misjudgement. Don't sit there and laugh or just get angry and not say a thing.

Where would you be if civil rights leaders just "brushed off" everything.

Do you people even know what racism is? It's the belief that one's own race or ethnic group is naturally superior to other races or ethnic groups.  Just because their prejudice or discriminative [which is a source of stereotyping, scapegoating, as well as the social enviroment], doesn't mean that they are RACIST...

Racism has been around since.. well.. probably even before Christ..

I'm not sure when the Jewish were around, but I heard a long time ago they were always pushed away, and that's messe dup. Racism will never end. Personally, I think at one point, every has been a racist, whether they say they are or say they are not.

Racism will never end and there are countless times that people have made fun of others because of their races. Although, it seems like you think that racism mainly happens to Asians, or that is what I see from your point of view in what you typed. There's so many racists that don't like African-Americans, Mexicans, Jewish, Canadians, etc. Racism is initially bad, but there's racism everywhere, so there's no absolute escape from it. Even if you lived in America, and then came to Asia or something, there will probably be people who would still make fun of you, saying you're too Americanized and whatnot.

Of course this is based on what I see. So don't take any to offense.

there's no reason to be racist to anyone. it's not like someone can change how they look.

1. ethnocentrism- tendency to view one's own CULTURE and GROUP as superior to all other CULTURES and GROUPS.
2. CULTURE- shared products of human groups; these products include both physical objects and the beliefs, values, and behaviors shared by the GROUP.

3. racism- believe that one's own RACE or ETHNIC GROUP is naturally superior to other RACES or ETHNIC GROUPS.
4. ETHNIC GROUP- individuals who share a common CULTURAL BACKGROUND and a common sense of identity.

There's a difference. You said that ethnocentrism is based of the ETHNIC GROUP... which it isn't...


Now, for other words that people may be having trouple with...

1. discrimination- denial of equal treatment to individuals based on their group membership.

2. ethnicity- set of cultural characteristics that distinguishes one group from another group.

3. prejudice- unsupported generalization about a category of people.

4. stereotype- oversimplified, exaggerated, or unfavorable generalization about a category of people.

Haering that makes me like my town a lot more... It's mostly white (and I am) but I haven't heard anyone really making fun of Asians. They just seems to fit in and half of them would be in the "popular" crowd. The only time I heard someone being make fun of it was jokingly and they guy was more flirting than teasing.

I believe that we all acknowledge the fact that racism still exists and judgments based on stereotypes continue on in society.
I also believe that we are aware that there is little we can do to completely eradicate it. The extent of what we can do is to not practice it and try to set an example that we can interact amongst one another with the absense of such ignorance. Activist groups, convicting those who commit hate crimes and the like only do so much for the bigger picture, but nonetheless loosely grips control over the problem.
It sounds so cheesy and cliche, but, realistically, that is the best we can do. Hate crimes will continue, ridicule based on race, belief and practice will linger on, and so on.

I will leave you all with the wise words of Smokey the Bear -
"Only YOU can prevent forest fires."
The relevance of that line is beyond me, don't ask.

Well, i think that racism is always going to be there, but it could be pretty swell if we could just put aside our prejudice and see what people are like inside before judging who the person is like. My school has like 70% asian (and i am chinese, by the way =) ), 25% white and 5% black, but still, my friends are all mixed up. Yes, i have to admit that i am more leanning toward the asian group of my friends, but that doesn't mean we need to separate ourself from other races. A lot of people is racist, and i mean, people are racist and they don't even realize it. I am a racist, and i am not proud to say that. It's just there in the situation and you don't even realize it. We were voting for school president and i have no idea anyone who's running (cuz i was in 7th grade), and i still just picked the person who have a asian last name. It's just who we are. I was raised like that, but sometimes, people get discrimnated for a reason, though the reason most likely doesn't really make much sense in one way or the other. Asians are smart because a few of them are, African Americans are troublemakers because they are always on the TV and they are always arrested or something, white people are always defined as preps if they have too much makeup, way too popular, or they just is what you define as "preps", but those are just a few people in these world from that race! You can't judge people because a few people you know from that race is a jerk. People are raised in different ways and let's just hope that soon, people will just see people's real color.

well theyre wrong. racism isnt necessarily believing your race pwns all other races. because you can be racist against one ethnicity but totally okay with the next. that doesnt mean you think your race is better than the other race. it just means you have some sort of irrational hate towards them. and yes ethnocentrism is based on an ethnic group.. thats why its called ETHNOcentrism. i studied this for two years by myself darling, i think i know the difference. not all books are all correct. some books view things differently than others. i have my sources from two or three books.

Why not just come to the agreement that the term is pretty flexible, but has the same general idea?
We don't need to have the definition correct, word-by-word.

yep yep, i totally agree with you. It's still pretty sad though, how people can be still ignorant after thousands and thousands of years of evolution and breakthroughs. Hmm, in I a way, I think racism can make people hate their own culture. They'll try to distance themselves as far as possible from their own culture to avoid any ridicule or jokes and thus we have the self-hating racists. It's not necessiraly wrong, it's just when you take it to the extreme that you should start changing your views.
The world just needs to be more varied so people can get use to the idea that people of different colored-skin won't just go away.
But ermm, yah, anyways, I totally feel for you...whoever posted the original comment. I'm a nerdy gay hispanic, can you imagine what hell i've been through.
