1. "rappers" have almost no talent what so ever. dont even try to tell me they do. Its not that hard to talk.

2. the beats are awful. they annoy the crap out of me.

3. its so damn ANNOYING! everytime a rap song plays on the radio I change it right away..its so stupid.

4. most rap these days is all about sex, drugs, violence..and the music videos degrade women. if there is "good rap" why dont we hear it?

5. I just dont like people who try to act all gangster-ish, it bugs me.

oops, you only said 3 reasons. I just dislike rap so much that I couldnt stop _smile.gif

You are generalizing. Don't tell me I don't know a lot of rap, it used to be my favorite genre.

Its sad. I grew up listening to rap and hip-hop music and it hasn't always been this materialistic, superficial, and immoral. But unfortunately, commercial rappers find this way to be the easiest way to make a buck and no longer try to appeal to the majority of their listeners, only to themselves and to those who live rich and famous lifestyles like them. Its the public's fault for buying this stuff...

Good thing there are still rappers who stay true to the roots of rap music and haven't sold out... Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, etc. If you want to listen to good rap music, try listening to different artists.

Yes it is sad, I used to listen to Run DMC when i was younger. I've heard the Roots before, I guess I'll check out the other guys you listed.

But most rap today is terrible.

1. The lyrics are materialistic are "I GOT ICE, DOLLAR BILLS, CARS BLING BLING!"

2. The lyrics condone violence/immoral behavior "I F***ED YOUR WIFE! I'M A PIMP! I GO ON SHOOTING SPREES!"

3. Rap music has changed many kids I know for the worse. I had many friends who were nice and reserved people, but when their friends started listening to rap music, they started acting "gangsta."

That could go both ways.
Maybe you don't like rock or metal because you don't know alot about it either.
But that's somewhat off topic.

1. its not music.. it takes a very small amount of talent to come up with a few notes repeated over and over again, and then talking fast with it... all it is a gazillion different ways of saying "i'm a pimp, i have a lot of sex, i've been shot a thousand times and im still alive, im on drugs... and did i say i like sex?"

2. every... single... last... song sounds the same. theres not exactly much variation. even within the SONG its all the same. its like a contest on how many times you can say "yeah" within 2 minutes.

3. the ghetto-ness is getting really old. maybe a select few of these people have actually lived in a ghetto, and had to withstand the hardships of living there. but the others? maybe they didnt start off rich, but i doubt very much they were living in the streets. so they need to STOP ACTING LIKE THEIR GHETTO. in the ghetto, you don't wear "bling" thats worth thousands of dollars and probably weighs thousands of pounds.

Im very proud of you! you understanmd how borign rap is you hit it right on the nosie! lol yeah go RAP CRAP!

QUOTE(xquizit @ Oct 9 2004, 9:04 AM)
Rap started off as something great. There was a message one time or another and it used to be more influential. Rappers spoke to the youth who were growing up in these ghettos hustling and what not and spoke about things they could relate to, things to give them hope, things to motivate/encourage them to do better things with their life. Their lyrics appealed to these young people going through hard times because they could identify with it. A lot of these rappers either grew up in it, witnessed it, or just knew a lot about it and just wanted to appeal to them or even just give others a glimpse of what its like in the "hood". Sometimes, it was just all about creating positive feel good music that "ghetto" youth could get down to to escape the negative environment they live in everyday. Then rap became more and more popular and a lot of rappers blew up and got rich, and now that's all that they can rap about because it sells. You have to understand that A LOT of these rappers came out of NOTHING or very little and now that they're making a lot of money, they're just trying to stick to the formula so that they continue to be rich, successful, and something instead of nothing... even if it means that now instead of being a positive influence, they've become negative and have "sold out" to hollywood and fame and are no longer being true to the streets.

Its sad. I grew up listening to rap and hip-hop music and it hasn't always been this materialistic, superficial, and immoral. whos to say? you dont know. and they only become popular because people let them be. old will smith type rap isnt bad. and some other old stuff isnt either. but you have to assume hes refferring to current rap, which is awful any way you look at it

Ok... everyone here is talking about mainstream rap.

Rap started off as something great. There was a message one time or another and it used to be more influential. And everyone who says its not hard to "rap" are ignorant. You obviously know nothing about what goes into writing these verses, and just the whole style of delivering it. It's much more complicated than you think. Don't you think we'd all be rich right now if it really were that simple. There is an art to rapping, and MOST people don't know it well, including a lot of famous "rappers" themselves.

Alright....I totally understand what your talking about Roxanne(sp? sorry I'm not really awake this morning) But mainstream rap is basically all there is today. That's what everyone's reffering to. All 'mainstream' rappers talk about today is how women are 'hoes' and how they're 'pimps', 'Look I f*cked your girlfriend, I'm such a player' When did those words become part of everyday language? Are they in the dictionary?

I listened to rap and hip hop a few years back. Then rappers like 50 cent came along. So maybe he grew up in the ghetto, but EVERY song is about that. Some of the rappers didn't even grow up in the ghetto, but they still lie in their raps about 'how hard' life was. Yeah, how hard it was to have money and live in a somewhat NICE house. That's not the ghetto. The ghetto is usually a neighborhood that has a lot of crime. Full of gangs. Grafitti everywhere. When your scared of going outside cuz you might get jumped or something.

Hell, I LIVE in the ghetto. Last week there was a guy who stabbed someone and then drove down my street crashed into my neighbor's car and sped away. My school used to have HUGE gang problems in the area so we switched to uniforms. We can't have lockers cuz they think we have guns. My mom is afraid to let to ride my bike down to my aunt's house, which mind you is right down the street. Literally like 2-3 minutes on a bike. Now I want you to tell me where I live isn't a bad neighborhood. If someone rapped about something like that then you know what? that's fine.

That was a little off topic, but I'm just giving you an example.

QUOTE

You don't like my music and maybe you don't understand it. And that's okay. I don't understand why it's oh so important to rap about being a 'pimp' but okay...

1) songs are all about sex, whores, money, whores, etc.

2) not a big vocabulary. ex: lil jon: WHAT!!! WHAT!!!

3) lifestyle- bad influence

that only shows that you've heard mainstream rap.

what about rappers like the ones roxy mentioned? some better known artists like nas, kanye west, 2pac, and even eminem have a lot of good songs. if you listen to a wide variety of their work, it goes a lot deeper than sex, whores, money, etc. listen to some eminem. his vocabulary range is actually quite big. listen to sing for a moment, and some other things... they can actually be really inspirational.

i agree with you if we're talking about 50cent or lil jon or chingy. i hate that kind of rap.

but you really shouldn't stereotype.

I don't hate all rap...just some artists, like 50 cent.

1.  His songs are exactly the same to me.  "I got shot, nigga.  f**k dat, nigga.  im f**kin awesome, nigga.  NIGGA WHATTTTTTT DRINK HOS NIGGA SLUTTTTT SEX FUCKKK"  sorry for the language though.

2.  I can't stand hearing ppl rap about hoes and getting with women and being rich.

Uhm, that's all.  Hope I'm not offending anyone.

^^^this is probably the only legitimate reason so far...

but not ALL rappers are "Money, Cash, Hoes"..they may have a couple songs hear and there but u have to listen beyond what the radio plays--because the radio plays what THEY want to play and what THEY think will sell..which is Money and Sex.

soo..saying that rappers have no talent is being ignorant. saying SOME rappers have no talent, i'd probably agree with you there.

most rappers dont have much of a flow, and they're juss talking basically.

all the rap is about girls, money, getting 'some', and showing off with all the bling.

using the 'crunk words' or whatever.

i really do like rap but some rappers are juss spoiling it for the others. doesnt send much of a message but get rich and you'll get laid? eminem, tupac, kayne west, and few others are rapping more then juss girls and money... about life, their experiences and things.

meh; just as long as it has a good beat i'm happy. ^_^

it's more of dance music than "sit-at-home-analyze-every-word-in-the-lyrics" music ^_^

music : defined scientifically as sound following a pattern, lyrics dont have to be involved, what about classical music = zero lyrics, does it haev no meaning also? It's jsut for entertainment, liek when your out and stuff; if it doesnt have a good beat and has crappy lyrics its shiz; but most rap sonds have evolved to where they eitehr have one or the other.....

We're talking about making it big, and being mainstream. Having a pattern, writing a song with no words, nothing to give to the community, is nothing. Youre getting paid for this.

The only rap I'll ever listen to is Eminem. I lovvvvveeee Eminem. I mean, his songs aren't about all that crap. -shrugs-
